Hyundai is also planning to develop a new entry-level SUV based on i20 Active or Kia’s Picanto platform and this could give an early indication of that
Hyundai recently introduced an updated version of i20 in India and also for global market. The next generation of i20 is expected to arrive in next 2-3 years time. A Korean website has spotted a test mule based on i20 Active but the design doesn’t look different from the current model and it might be an early prototype of next generation model.
We reported earlier this month that Hyundai was planning to develop a new entry level SUV based on i20 Active or Kia’s Picanto platform, as the manufacturer was yet to confirm which platform to use. The test mule spotted might be new SUV which is going to be developed based on i20 Active platform or the next-gen Active itself.

The test mule spied is heavily camouflaged and it looks similar to recently facelift i20. But the ground clearance appears to be higher than Active version of i20. The tail lamps which are visible from the camouflage are exactly similar to the one available in facelift version of i20. The bumper is different and it has circular reflectors like the ones on Grand i10.
The glass area, roof rails and mirrors comes straight from i20 Active. This test mule might be an early prototype which is why it has lots of similarities to i20 Active. Hyundai might have started working on next generation of i20 Active, which is the reason for similar body dimension and structure. Earlier reports suggested that the company is planning to launch the i20 platform based SUV in 2022 as it will be manufactured at new plant in Gwangju. It is expected to complete construction by 2020-2021.
In Korea, Hyundai could offer 1.0 L, 1.2 L and 1.0 L turbocharged engines for SUV with option of 5 speed manual and automatic transmission. The dimensions are expected to be around i20 size, so we are not expecting four wheel drive system to be available. The upcoming SUV will be a perfect model to be placed below new sub 4 metre which is currently under development
But some reports points that the i20 based SUV could reach India as a Kia model as the company is in its early stages of development and a new entry level SUV could help the brand reach even more audience. As the development of product goes on, it will change and final product might be completely different.
