Honda City is one of the most popular sedans in the Asian market and the current generation model was introduced in 2013. Then the company launched the mid-life facelift model in 2017 but the competition is intense and in the Indian market, it has lost the lead to Maruti Suzuki Ciaz while the Hyundai Verna outsold the City last year.
According to a new report, Honda might debut the next generation of City by the end of this year in Thailand market and then it will be introduced in other markets. The company might showcase the new City at the 2020 Auto Expo and the launch could take place in the second half of next year. Globally the City will be in its seventh generation.
The next generation of City is expected to be based on a revised platform of the current model and the exterior design theme is likely to be in line with the new Accord. The front will get a new grille along with revised LED headlamps with integrated LED DRLs and a revised set of bumpers with new fog lamps. We can expect Honda to offer wider wheels instead of skinny tyres on the current model.
The rear will likely get a new LED tail lamp cluster and the interior might get a new design to make the sedan look even more premium. The quality of materials is also expected to improve and the City will be packed with features like touchscreen infotainment system, climate control, sunroof, leather seats, reverse camera and more.
In Thailand, the City will come with a new 1.0 L turbocharged 3 cylinder petrol engine with VTEC and Dual VTC system. The petrol engine is expected to deliver around 200 Nm of torque between 2,000 and 4,500 rpm. Honda will update this engine later to be compatible with E85 petrol-ethanol blend.
The Japanese manufacturer is also planning to introduce a 1.5 L petrol engine with a mild hybrid system as it will come with two electric motors and PGM-FI injectors to further enhance efficiency. These engines will be mated to a 6-speed manual and an updated CVT transmission. In India, Honda might introduce an updated version of the 1.5 L i-DTEC unit also.
