The second generation 208 will be based on the new CMP platform, which will help the hatchback to shed more than 100 kg

The second generation Peugeot 208 has been spied for the first time with production body parts, as the new model follows the same design language as new 508 sedan, which made its debut recently. The new 208 will be longer and wider than the outgoing model as the company want to improve interior space.

The upcoming hatchback will be based on new CMP platform, which will help 208 to shed more than 100 kgs compared to its predecessor. But the electric variant of 208 will sit on the e-CMP platform and the design will be exactly similar for both models except for minor changes like closed front grille and new alloy wheels.

Peugeot has already confirmed that the new model will be available only as a 5 door variant as demand for 3 door sporty looking hatchbacks have come down considerably in recent times. The current generation 208 is the only model, which is still available in 3 door form while Volkswagen with Polo and SEAT with Ibiza are all available in practical 5 door versions.

The new 208 comes with swept back LED headlamps and redesigned front grille along with updated bumper at front. The test mule spied appears to be performance GTi variant as it sits closer to ground and rear get twin exhaust, which is usually only offered with GTi models. The company has also given an integrated spoiler at the rear along with LED tail lamps.

The second generation 208 will be one of the best looking models in its segment and the interior will continue the elegant design theme of the exterior. The hatchback will come with three spoke multi-functional steering wheel with new digital instrument cluster and touchscreen infotainment system integrated into the centre console.

We can expect Peugeot to pack 208 with lots of features like climate control, leather seats, cruise control and more. The hatchback will also come with latest safety features like emergency brake assist. The 208 GTi is expected to produce around 230 hp of power and the electric model comes with 450 km range. Peugeot will officially reveal the new 208 at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2019.
