2019 Maruti Suzuki Wagon R will likely have bigger dimensions with noticeable exterior and interior updates

Going on sale just ahead of the turn of the millennium, Maruti Suzuki Wagon R has captivated customers for nearly two decades and is a highly popular nameplate in the volume segment that set the foundation for the brand dominating over 50 percent market share domestically.

The Wagon R is not going anywhere despite being around for several years without major exterior updates. The tall hatchback, instead, is part of the future strategy to eke more out of the affordable space and is the first pure electric model from Maruti Suzuki due in 2020. Having already greeted public in prototype form, the Wagon R EV’s road testing was confirmed to begin next month.

However, ahead of its appearance the next generation Wagon R with a raft of visual changes will likely be introduced as early as February 2019. It is expected to carry the no-nonsense recipe of its predecessors with the spacious cabin, easy-to-maintain economical engine and a bag of new features.

The third generation Wagon R we are getting is already up for grabs in Japan and other markets since February 2017. The global sixth-gen model will act as a much-needed upgrade to compete against latest rivals like Tata Tiago and Renault Kwid. Having reportedly dismissed the plans for a seven-seater variant, the new Wagon R will adorn modern exterior and interior revisions.

It will more likely be based on a brand new platform with more rigidity and toughness to meet the upcoming safety regulations with standard safety features like dual front airbags, seatbelt reminder, reverse parking sensors, speed alert function, speed sensing door locks, etc.

On the outside, the 2019 Maruti Suzuki Wagon R will boast a prominent grille with larger headlamps and vertically positioned unique tail lamps in the rear bumper, bigger windscreen and front air inlet, sporty front bumper and so on. The dashboard and centre console are thoroughly new featuring touchscreen infotainment system in the top-ends.

Expected to launch in India sometime next year, the 2019 Maruti Suzuki Wagon R could be based on a brand new platform with increased toughness and rigidity. The flexible Heartect platform underpinning the latest vehicles from the brand’s stable could be an option as well with increased proportions enabling a more spacious cabin.

The existing 1.0-litre K10B three-cylinder petrol engine producing 67 bhp at 6,200 rpm and 90 Nm of peak torque delivered at 3,500 rpm could be updated to generate more performance. A CNG version will also be part of the equation for customers needing more mileage.

Sending power to the front wheels could continue to be a five-speed manual and an optional AMT. With JDM-spec Wagon R spotted many times with mild-hybrid technology, we can expect a similar system in the near future. A price range of Rs. 4.6 lakh to Rs. 5.8 lakh (ex-showroom) may well be targetted.
