The fourth generation Mahindra Scorpio will go on sale next year and is expected to debut at the 2020 Auto Expo

Over the last few weeks, Mahindra & Mahindra has continuously been spied testing the next generation Scorpio. Again spotted in Tamil Nadu, the test mule emphasises the possible changes that will be bolted on the popular SUV. The Scorpio will move to its fourth generation from next year and is expected to take on modern rivals with a thoroughly revised exterior and interior along with more upmarket features.

The 2020 Mahindra Scorpio sits on the updated ladder frame chassis and it appears to have bigger dimensions than the outgoing model. The spy pictures show that the upcoming model could be longer and taller with perhaps more wheelbase to free up more interior space for the occupants.

The overall silhouette does remain the same but the next-gen Scorpio looks to have higher ground clearance as well among the proportional changes. The upgraded front end with seven slated grille assembly does remind me of the Alturas G4 in particular. The upright structure is imposing to say the least and the design will evolve in the future spy shots when production-ready parts are fitted on.

Unlike the grille and wider central air dam, the headlamps and fog lamps do not seem to be the final production pieces. The rear end does indicate a new tailgate with raked glass area and the tail lamps might have grown smaller. An integrated spoiler with high-mounted stop lamps can be expected on the middle and top-end variants.

While we do not have a clear picture of the 2020 Mahindra Scorpio’s interior yet, it can be expected to feature revised equipment list along with the inclusion of more modern connective technologies. The SUV will reportedly make its global premiere alongside the second generation Thar at the 2020 Auto Expo.

As for the powertrain, a brand new 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine will likely replace the existing 2.2-litre mHawk diesel and 2.5-litre m2DICR diesel. The lighter unit will produce more power and torque expectedly. With 160 PS power and more than 320 Nm of peak torque, it is said to be mated to either a six-speed manual or a new Magneti Marelli sourced automatic transmission with 4WD as optional.
