The new Maruti Wagon R is expected to launch in early February, Will rival the new Hyundai Santro
Maruti Suzuki has just launched the new generation Ertiga at starting price of Rs 7.44 lakh. The company is now gearing up to launch the new Wagon R to compete with the recently launched Hyundai Santro. The second generation of the tallboy will retain the current engine, which will be updated to BSVI standards. Even the 5-speed manual and AMT will be retained.
The new Wagon R will offer many premium features. This will help the car compete with the new generation Hyundai Santro. The next-gen Wagon R will have touchscreen Smartplay infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, multi-function steering wheel, reverse parking camera, alloy wheels, and driver’s seat height adjustment.
The new Wagon R will be underpinned by an updated version of the current model’s platform. The revised architecture will help the car comply with the upcoming safety standards. ABS, driver’s airbag, front seatbelt reminder, reverse parking sensors, and ISOFIX child seat mounts will be standard across all the variants.

Visually, the new Wagon R will look completely different from the current model. The tallboy structure will be retained, but the similarities will end there. The new model should share some styling elements with the version on sale in Japan.
In its current form, the 1.0-litre K10 engine produces 67 bhp and 90 Nm of peak torque. The performance figures will not vary, but the fuel mileage could get a massive boost with the introduction of the SHVS mild hybrid system. The current model offers 20.51 kmpl, but this figure should increase by a good margin due to the mild hybrid system.
As always, the company will play its trump card of mileage to steal buyers away from the competition. The mild hybrid system should be the most significant factor for the new Wagon R to build upon the legacy of its predecessors. We think the next generation version will be able to give the new Hyundai Santro and Tata Tiago a good fight.
