2018 Maruti Suzuki Ertiga will get a new 1.5-litre petrol SHVS powertrain but the existing 1.3-litre DDiS 200 unit will continue initially

Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) is preparing to launch the new generation Ertiga in the domestic market on November 21. The best-selling affordable MPV locally has endured consistent sales despite gaining moderate updates through its over six years of lifespan.

While the original Ertiga made its world debut in India in 2012 before expanding to other markets, the upcoming avatar first debuted at the 2018 Indonesia International Motor Show in April. Based on the brand new lighter Heartect architecture as the latest Baleno, Swift and Dzire, the 2018 Ertiga has larger proportions.

Compared to the outgoing model, it is 99 mm longer, 40 mm wider and 5 mm taller with same wheelbase of 2,740 mm. However, it has sacrificed some bootspace – 35 litres to be exact – and 5 mm ground clearance. The upshot is that the Ertiga could be more engaging to drive and be fuel-efficient than the existing version.

Along with the lightness, the presence of a new petrol engine with mild-hybrid start/stop technology could aid in increased economy – currently rated at 17.5 kmpl. The 1.4-litre petrol engine will be replaced by the in-house developed 1.5-litre K15B petrol SHVS unit that debuted in the Ciaz facelift. The more powerful four-cylinder engine should be good enough to produce 104.7 PS at 6,000 rpm and 138 Nm of peak torque at 4,400 rpm.

It is connected to a five-speed manual transmission as standard or a four-speed automatic as optional. Unlike initial expectations, the long-serving 1.3-litre Fiat-sourced DDiS 200 diesel engine making 90 PS and 200 Nm will stay put and is mated to a five-speed manual gearbox only. It will eventually be opted out to make way for the all-new 1.5-litre diesel mill with BSVI compliance.

The exterior gets sharper design elements courtesy of the thorough overhaul while the interior does have its share of changes as well with more upmarket features. The range-topping variant will come equipped with Smartplay touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, revised dashboard layout, new centre console with premium finish, flat bottom steering wheel with mounted control, faux wooden trim, automatic AC, cruise control, chrome door handles, etc.
