The new Land Rover Discovery is far lighter than the outgoing model with modern design and greater performance; deliveries from November
Back in August, Land Rover announced prices for the new Discovery as the range is said to start at Rs. 68.05 lakh (ex-showroom) for the base 3.0L petrol model. The prices have indeed changed due to the recently revised GST cess right now. Its official domestic debut has happened today in India as announced during the ‘Discovery with a purpose’ drive.
The Audi Q7 rival derives power from either a 335 bhp 3.0-litre V6 petrol or a 254 bhp producing six-pot diesel. They produce 450 Nm and 600 Nm respectively. An eight-speed automatic transmission send power to all wheels as standard. It is one of the important products for the British manufacturer not just in India but globally as well.
The original Discovery was launched in late 1980s and quickly attained legendary status with its seven seat configuration and set the hallmark for future models. The diesel can accelerate to a top speed of 209 kmph and is claimed to do 0-100 kmph in just 8.1 seconds while petrol variants can run to 215 kmph maximum speed and has 0-100 kmph rated in 7.1 seconds.
Towards the end of last millennium, Land Rover introduced the second gen version before an all-new avatar came into existence in 2004. The outgoing Discovery was in its fourth generation that was launched way back in 2010 and thus making the new model a kind of revelation. It is Land Rover’s take on the Discovery Vision Concept showed at the New York Auto Show more than three years ago.
In September 2016, the road-going new Discovery was rolled out of the Solihull production facility before making its global premiere in Paris. The full-sized SUV is based on a lightweight architecture claimed to enable superior comfort. The significant weight reduction due to clever manufacturing process and the lighter platform meant the new Discovery has shed about 480 kilograms.
The aluminium monocoque construction makes it faster and stiffer than ever. The design language deviates from the outgoing model with swoopy and curvy stance in line with the latest ethos followed globally. Moreover, the Discovery Sport has become more modern and brings a plush appeal it never done before.
On the inside, there have been several changes implemented like the inclusion of high quality materials and finishes and dual-tone scheme with plenty of high-tech features. The intelligent seat fold technology allows for passengers to configure the second and third row seats as part of the InControl Touch Pro Services via a smartphone app or by other means.
Other important features are InControl infotainment system with a 10-inch display, six-speaker audio system, dual sunroofs, optional Terrain Response 2 system, parallel parking assist, a heads-up display, a 360-degree camera, etc.
The top-spec HSE trim gains InControl TouchPro infotainment system, 17-speaker Meridian Audio system, heated seats, up to nine USB ports, an in-car 3G Wi-Fi hotspot, four 12V charging points and so on. The Discovery is a welcoming addition to the brand’s SUV lineup before the arrival of the astonishing Velar.
