New Hyundai Sonata 1.6 Turbo uses a T-GDi petrol engine with 180 horsepower mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission

Hyundai has revealed the brand new 1.6-litre turbocharged version of the Sonata at the ongoing Seoul Motor Show. It is displayed alongside a range of N Performance parts and the hybrid version of the Sonata. It will more likely go on sale later this year in the global markets and features a Smart Stream G1.6 T-GDi petrol engine.

It is good enough to generate a maximum power output of 180 hp and is connected to an eight-speed automatic transmission, which is claimed to optimise the sedan’s smoothness and make throttle response efficient. The exterior of the Sonata 1.6 Turbo gets Hyundai’s first ‘Parametric Jewel’ front grille and a number of premium touches to enhance the overall stature of the premium executive sedan.

The wide stance is enhanced by the presence of air ducts beneath the headlamps for channelling air through the bumper. It also helps in reducing drag by sending air across the face of the wheels. The rear end comes with a spoiler in wing shape and a unique bumper along with a dual exhaust system.

Compared to the previous generation Sonata, the new model gets a longer wheelbase and lower roofline to further elevate its appeal and maximise legroom. Under a new exhibition concept called ‘Play Hyundai’, the motor show visitors are treated with interactive Hyundai products and the ‘Sonata Village’ showcases smart mobility devices developed for the new-gen Sonata.

It includes Digital Key, Passenger Comfort Seat, Built-in Cam and Voice Recognition Assistant Service. Also on display in Seoul is the N branded Veloster with official performance parts set for arrival in late 2019 and it has a slew of customisation tricks up its sleeve. It adorns 45 customisable parts including 14 driving performance enhancers like lightweight forged wheels, larger brake callipers and brake pads, carbon-fibre side skirt and diffuser, performance-spec suspension system and tyres among others.

The 2020 Hyundai Sonata follows Sensuous Sportiness design language and it derives plenty of design inspiration from the Le Fil Rouge concept that debuted at 2018 Geneva Motor Show. The interior takes influence from the Stealth aircraft while the dashboard has been redesigned compared to the outgoing model with a larger touchscreen infotainment system and use of upscale materials.
