Hyundai’s Hydrogen Fuel Cell Powered SUV To Debut At CES 2018

Hyundai’s new hydrogen fuel cell powered car comes as successor to ix35; draws inspiration from FE Fuel Cell concept

Hyundai is pretty serious about green mobility, but the South Korean auto major is keeping several other options open alongside the battery powered pure electric zero emission models. As we have already reported, Hyundai is seriously working towards hydrogen fuel cell powertrain technology and now it is ready to unveil its newest FCEV model at 2018 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

Hyundai is yet to reveal the name of this upcoming SUV, but it is clear that the vehicle is inspired by FE Fuel Cell Concept that was displayed at 2017 Geneva Motor Show. Also, this SUV arrives as the successor of the automaker’s previous FCEV model, the ix35 Fuel Cell.

Speaking about its design it appears with subtle similarity to the Hyundai Kona as well. It gets a quad headlamp setup at front fascia with sleek LED lights on top connected by a chrome strip. Below those lamps are delta shaped LED projector headlamps. A bold and large front grille is there and below there is a wide air intake at front bumper along with vertically positioned air dams at both ends of the bumper.

Side profile of the car gets a flowing design and black cladding at wheel arches and lower part. It runs on sporty and large alloy wheels. Instead of conventional door handles, it gets sleek touch pads. There are black glass area, turn indicator integrated ORVMs, sporty roof rails, a sloping roofline. Moving to the rear, there is an integrated black roof spoiler, shark fin antenna, wraparound delta shaped LED taillights, a sculpted black bumper. Inside the cabin, it is expected to come packed with high end features.

As the new FCEV SUV is inspired by FE Fuel Cell Concept, we can expect it to get around 800 kilometre running range with 30% higher power density compared to the ix35Fuel Cell. Apart from the green powertrain technology, this new SUV will also arrive with advanced driver assistance systems that will make driving experience more comfortable. Also, this will ensure better safety for the car and the occupants inside its cabin.

Speaking about the semi-autonomous technology that is to be offered in the Hyundai’s new hydrogen fuel cell powered SUV, it is expected to similar as Volkswagen AG’s Traffic Jam Assist. This technology will control the car’s acceleration, braking and steering maneuvers in certain environments. Implementation of this technology will not only make this green car more attractive, but it will also help Hyundai to develop and improve the autonomous driving technology for its future cars.

Interestingly, Hyundai is working on driverless car technology and it is expected to be available in mass market in 2021. Before that, Hyundai’s upcoming fuel cell car will allow the brand a testing platform.

This is not the first time, Hyundai will use the CES as a platform to showcase its automotive innovation. Previously, Hyundai showcased the Ioniq Autonomous at the 2017 CES. The Ioniq Autonomous blended zero emission powertrain technology with futuristic driverless tech.
