Ford Developing Highly Flexible New Generation C Platform

Ford’s new generation C platform will be able to accommodate alternative powertrains and autonomous driving technology; expected to be ready for use by 2020

American auto manufacturer Ford is currently working on the new generation C platform that will be underpinning a range of cars. But, the most important and interesting part of the development of this next-generation Ford C platform is that it will be able to accommodate alternative powertrains and this is going to be the first ever Ford architecture, capable of housing autonomous driving technology.

The new generation Ford C platform is expected to be ready for use by 2020. Currently, this highly flexible platform is being development in Germany and this would play a very important role for the brand’s future strategy. Ford believes that around 30% of the world automobile market will be ruled by electric, hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles by 2030 and the American auto major eyes a major part of that.

In that case, the new generation C platform is expected to be capable of housing high-tech advanced electronics and large battery packs that will enable the automaker to produce various alternative powertrain equipped cars. Ford has not revealed anything officially, but the brand is working on autonomous driving technology for quite some time and it has already developed a level 4 self-driving car as well.

The brand plans to roll out its self-driving technology enabled car for ride sharing services by 2021. In that case, it can be expected that the autonomous car would come underpinned by the new C platform. However, we would know further details in near future.

Being one of the largest and fast growing markets in the world, India is going to play very crucial role for Ford’s global expansion strategy. The company has already seen success with models like EcoSport, Endeavour, Figo and Aspire in the country in recent past. It has launched the Mustang too, which has received positive response from the Indian buyers. An important future model from the brand is going to be the Kuga, which is based on the C platform. In that case, we might expect the new generation C platform to be introduced in the domestic market through Kuga and several other future models as well.
