New generation Audi A4 Unveiled in India, launching soon
Audi has taken the wraps off its new generation Audi A4 luxury sedan at the Auto Expo 2016. The most important launch from Indian market’s perspective as the company relied heavily on the sales of the outgoing and top-selling A4 model over the years. With Mercedes registering a 32% growth to become the leader of the luxury car segment in 2015, the 2016 Audi A4 carries all the more significance.
The newest Audi A4 made its world debut at the 2015 Frankfort Motor Show last September and will be introduced in the overseas market by the end of 2016. Built on the company’s front-wheel drive MLB Evo platform with a lightweight body shell, the Audi A4 weighs 120kg lesser than the existing model with a sharp new styling and has fuel efficient and more powerful engine line-up. To keep it in-line with the main competitors Mercedes C-Class and BMW 3 Series, the new Audi A4 has gone through several revisions that would be perceived as upgrades rather than a ground-breaking revolution.
For instance, the desgin of the side profile remains largely identical to the current model whilst the headlamps received modifications with a new singleframe grille and optional LED or Matrix LED headlights with dynamic turn signals. The tail lamps have become slimmer to substantiate the overall appearance.
The front fascia will have similarities to the Audi TT sportscar it shares compenents with and it measures about the same height as the outgoing model. However, the length has been increased by 25mm, width by 16mm and wheelbase by 12mm. Therefore the new Audi A4 proportions are 4726 mm long, 1842 mm wide, 1427 mm tall and a wheelbase of 2820 mm.
The seven different engine options offered internationally includes two diesel mills with the options of four-cylinder, three turbo petrol and the rest are V6 motors. The 2.0 TDI unit comes in two states of tunes: a 148 PS and 187 PS and are more likely to be made available for the Indian market. The 3.0 TDI V6 diesel engine also comprises two power tunes: 218 PS and 272 PS. The base petrol model of the 2016 Audi A4 will have a 1.4-litre generating 148 PS of maximum power and the 2.0-litre TFSI petrol pumping out 248 PS.
The transmission options depending on the engines are a six-speed manual and redeveloped seven-speed dual clutch S-tronic automatic. The base V6 model will be coupled with the S-tronic whilst the top-end variants of V6 engine will get the eight-speed automatic gearbox. Standard equipment includes a 17-inch alloys wheels, seven-inch MMI interface with smartphone integration, Xenon headlamps with LED Daytime Running Lights, three-zone climate control, Audi drive select alongside optional Audi’s Virtual Cockpit.
