New Generation Nissan Sunny to Launch in India Next Year

2018 Nissan Sunny will derive design cues from the all-new Micra hatchback sold globally; to feature a new 1.5-litre petrol engine

The 2017 Nissan Micra with an all-new design language, inspired by the Sway concept, would have certainly impressed everyone when it made debut at the 2016 Paris Motor Show late last year. It is built on the new CMF-B platform as the Juke and is stylish, modern and spacious compared to the existing generation of Micra running on our roads.

As much as we want to see it here, it is uncertain whether the new-gen Micra would ever reach Indian shores. However, its influence could be largely felt on the upcoming generation of the Sunny mid-size sedan. Here is everything you need to know about the new-gen Nissan Sunny:

New Nissan Sunny Launch Sometime in 2018

The globally familiar Sunny sedan is expected to launch in its new avatar in India sometime next year and it will be locally produced at the brand’s Chennai facility. It could accompany the Kicks compact SUV as Nissan could be targetting big market share from the upmarket segments.

We already showed you a typical rendering from Theophilus Chin who used the new generation Micra’s design and came up with a possible imagination of the forthcoming Sunny or Almera or Versa as called elsewhere.

Looking at the image, it is easy to see the character lines running from the top of the headlights. It features the signature V motion grille with sharper bumper and fog lamp unit. The lower door crease also looks similar to the new Micra along with the quirky kink at the rear window.

The boomerang styled tail lamp cluster is also retained with a rather subtle rear end on the rendering. According to a report emerged on the internet, the new Sunny could make its way into India sometime next year. Unlike the global-spec model being based on the V platform, Indian version is rumoured to just stick with the low-cost CMF-A architecture in order to bring the production costs down.

The existing Sunny is known for its spacious cabin but the new-gen model could buck the trend and lean towards a compromise between space and handling agility. It is said to be done to keep pace with the successful rivals like the Honda City, Maruti Suzuki Ciaz and the Hyundai Verna.

2018 Nissan Sunny Engine Specifications

For India, the Sunny first went on sale first in 2011 before a facelifted version arrived. It now gets two engine options – a 1.5-litre petrol engine and a 1.5-litre diesel with variants under XE, XL and XV. The former develops 98 bhp and 134 Nm of torque while the latter makes 85 bhp and 200 Nm of torque. Both engines are connected with a five-speed manual while the petrol is offered with a CVT gearbox.

Currently, the petrol manual has claimed fuel economy of 16.95 kmpl, petrol CVT automatic at 17.97 kmpl and diesel manual at 22.71 kmpl. The report further suggested that the new Sunny will get the group’s new 1.5-litre petrol engine making 106 horsepower but there won’t be a diesel motor at all.

2018 Nissan Micra Expected Price Rs. 7.5 lakh to Rs. 12 lakh

The Sunny witnessed a dramatic drop in its price range recently and is now sold at Rs. 6.9 lakh for the base XE variant and it goes up to Rs. 8.94 lakh (ex-showroom, New Delhi). If the Japanese manufacturer can maintain the same price bracket in the all-new Sunny, which is highly unlikely, it could possibly have a winner on its hands as the City (Rs. 8.46-13.44 lakh) and Ciaz (Rs. 7.66-11.44 lakh) are far more pricier.
