Mumbai port exports 6,316 cars on a single ship; the cars including General Motors and Volkswagen models were shipped to Mexico

Mumbai Port has set a new record in its history of car shipping to overseas. The busy port has shipped a total of 6,316 units of cars on a single ship to Mexico. Earlier the port had a record of shipping 5,376 cars on a single ship. The Ministry of Shipping said in a statement, that the port has set a new record on its new berth ‘OCT-2’.

The ship M.V. HOEGH ST PETERSBERG berthed at the port on 6th August, 2016 and sailed on 9th August, 2016. The shipment included a total of 3,115 units of General Motors cars and 3,093 units of Volkswagen models. The shipment is headed to Mexico mainly. The statement by Ministry of Shipping has praised the Mumbai Port Trust for its contribution in the export business and the ‘Make in India’ campaign as well.

Mumbai Port has been known as one of the busiest port in India. It also contributes a large part in the total export volume of the Indian automobile industry. It has become the number pone shipping port on the west coast of India. In last few years, the business in the port has grown up to 25%. The Ministry of Shipping has praised the port for its improved facilities and reduced cost of cargo handling.

In June, 2016; Mumbai Port Trust reduced the vessel related charges by around 10% on the applicable rates for coastal vessels. This price reduction certainly encouraged the operators. It also helped the coastal movement of automobile cargo. Therefore, in recent few months Mumbai Port has seen an increased activity in the automobile shipping.

The Indian automobile industry exports products to several overseas markets like Mexico, Latin America, several African countries, Europe and some Asian countries as well. A major number of exported vehicles are exported through the Mumbai Port alone.
