Mumbai Gets First CNG Kits for Two-Wheelers in India

Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) launched CNG kits for two-wheelers in Mumbai in association with Eco Fuel; 18 scooters are approved for the project

India’s first CNG-fuelled two-wheelers have been launched in Mumbai by the Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL). The launch was conducted in association with Eco Fuel (Indian Partners of Lovato, Italy). A total of 18 scooters across different brands have been chosen for the installation of CNG kits. With this program, more than 36 lakh two-wheelers in Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) will be eligible to opt for environment friendly fuel.

The eco-friendly kit for two-wheelers comprises of two CNG cylinders, each weighing 1.2 kg. With this, the two-wheeler can run close to 130 km per kg of CNG. This makes the pricing of the fuel approximately 0.60 paisa per kilometre. In the initial stage, the selected scooters will be retrofitted with a CNG kit that is built by Lovato.

Currently two kit builders, ITUK and Lovato, in the Indian market have got approval for CNG kit manufacturing. Lovato has received approval from ARAI for a total of 18 scooter models. These scooters are – Hero Duet, Hero Maestro, Hero Pleasure, Honda Activa, Honda Dio, Mahindra Duro DZ, Mahindra Gusto, Mahindra Gusto 125, Suzuki Access, Suzuki LET’S, Suzuki Swish, TVS Jupiter, TVS Scooty Zest, TVS Wego, Vespa 125, Yamaha Alpha, Yamaha Fascino and Yamaha Ray.

Existing infrastructure can serve CNG to over 10 lakh vehicles in its operational area. More than 27 lakh kilos of CNG can be provided to these vehicles per day. More the two-wheelers opt for the CNG kits, better is for the environment. Trend shows, in recent times, CNG powered vehicles have grown significantly in Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

Apart from launching the CNG powered two-wheelers, Mahanagar Gas Limited has also launched MGL Connect Mobile App. This app will help the customers to find nearest CNG stations in MMR. Also an e-wallet payment system has been introduced with an objective to make the CNG filling and payment system cashless.
