The compact SUV based on the upcoming MG Comet is expected to launch by the middle of this decade

MG recently announced that the brand is going to launch its compact electric SUV codenamed E260, and it will be built on the Comet EV’s platform GSEV (Global Small Electric Vehicle) which SAIC, General Motors and Wuling jointly developed.

The compact SUV would be under 3 metres in length and will have a 3-door design. This would make it somewhat similar to the KUV100, and if the eKUV100 launches anytime soon, both of them would be the closest rivals. The design of the E260 might be borrowed from the Yep Micro SUV concept showcased earlier by MG’s sister brand Baojun.

As for the powertrain, the Comet SUV could be powered by a 17.3kWh single electric motor mounted on the rear axle which produces 40 PS of peak power with a range of 200 km, and a 26.7kWh battery with a range of 300km. It is reported that this new Micro EV will use a dual-motor system, one on each axle, sending power to all 4 wheels and producing close to 100-odd PS of peak power.

The Comet EV meanwhile will sport a dual 10.25-inch screen setup for the infotainment and instrument cluster, connected car tech, 2-spoke steering and more and is expected to be priced under INR 10 lakhs (ex-showroom). The Comet EV will sport a boxy design, a compact size, and 3 doors and will be decently packed with features.

The Comet is reported to have a range of 300 km. The Comet will be manufactured in MG’s Gujarat plant and although not much is known about the compact/micro SUV, it is a known fact that the Comet EV will be available in 5 colour options – White, Blue, Green, Yellow, and Pink.

MG is planning to localise, quite heavily, all the components of the Comet SUV, including the battery to develop a new micro SUV. The GSEV platform used will be largely unchanged but the localisation of components will help MG cut costs, improve production efficiency and offer a better after-sales experience. Keeping this in mind, the MG Micro SUV would be launched around 2025 and could sit in the INR 10 lakhs bracket.
