At the ongoing 2018 MOVE Summit, the Global Mobility Summit organised by NITI Aayog, in New Delhi, MG Motor India has showcased the MG RX5 electric SUV. It’s worth mentioning here that the company has been spotted testing the RX5 electric in India on previous occasions.
The MG RX5 Electric, aka MG ERX5, has one of the longest driving ranges in the world with a claimed range of 425 kms on a single charge. The battery pack of this electric SUV can be charged in just 45-60 minutes using a DC fast charger. The MG ERX5 measures 4,554 mm in length; 1,855 mm in width and 1,700 mm in height.
SAIC Motor Corp, the parent company of MG Motor, has appealed to the Indian government for incentive-driven policies for electric vehicles. It has already earmarked USD 500 million for investment in India for the development of electric vehicles by 2020.
MG Motor India has already commenced the process of launching a world-class electric vehicle in India. It will make suitable investments in its Halol-based plant in Gujarat. This plant was bought from General Motors in 2017. The plant already has a production capacity of 80,000 units annually. The company now plans to upgrade the plant to an annual capacity of 1,80,000 units.
Speaking at the Niti Aayog global mobility summit, SAIC President Chen Zhixin said development of new energy vehicles needs the government’s strong support in terms of policies.
While the company plans to launch globally-competitive all-electric vehicles in India, Chen Zhixin has appealed to the Indian government to define the technology standards for EVs on an immediate basis. “I would like to appeal to Indian government, to provide support and incentive policies, and accelerate the infrastructure construction, such as charging facilities,” Zhixin said.
