Mercedes GLE 450 AMG Coupe to Launch in India on January 12th; the five-seater SUV will be imported through CBU route

Mercedes India will be lifting the cloak off its GLE 450 AMG Coupe in less than three weeks on 12th January. The German manufacturer has affirmed the unveiling which will see the coupe-ish SUV being added to the existing line-up that includes GLA, GLE and the GL Class utility vehicles.

The Mercedes GLE (M class facelift) was released into the Indian market back in October with base 250d priced at Rs. 58.9lakh and 69.9lakh for the range-topping 350d model(ex-showroom Delhi). On the contrary to the facelifted M class, which has been produced locally at Mercedes’ factory in Chakan, the GLE 450 AMG Coupe will be imported through the CBU channel.

The premium five-seater SUV adapts a different body style with its coupe-like roofline. It’s a segment spurred by the likes of BMW X6 – the GLE 450 AMG Coupe Sport’s main rival in India as well – by finding the best performance and handling optimisation of a coupe besides not spilling out the fun of an utility vehicle.

On the outside, the GLE Coupe comprises big air inlets, single slat diamond grille pattern, Multibeam LED headlights, aggressive AMG Sport body kit with larger forged rims, 21-inch alloy wheels and LED tail lights. The dual-tone interior has premium leather, ambient lighting and eight-inch COMAND freestanding display.

The multi-functional flat bottom steering wheel has controls for music and Bluetooth telephony. The premium SUV with be equipped with cruise control, three-zone climate control, rear-view camera with guidance, auto-dimming, adjustable and retractable ORVMs, DYNAMIC SELECT and electronically adjustable seats and headrests.

The AMG Sport variant of the GLE 450 Coupe was first showcased at the Detroit Motor Show in January 2015 and comes powered by 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged V6 petrol engine that is good enough to produce 362hp of maximum power at 5500rpm and 516Nm of peak torque from 1800rpm.

It’s coupled with a nine-speed 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission that sends power to all the four wheels through a standard 4MATIC AWD system. The big SUV weighs over 2,200kg but despite that it can sprint from standstill to 100kmph in just 5.6 seconds.

The Mercedes GLE 350d Coupe’s 3.0-litre V6 twin turbocharged diesel engine developing 255bhp power and 620Nm of torque paired with the same 9G-TRONIC transmission could also be introduced on the AMG Sport a while later. The Mercedes GLE 450 AMG Coupe Sport ‘s will go up against BMW X6 xDrive40d with M body kit in the Indian market and is expected to have a starting price of just under a crore rupees.
