Mercedes-Benz S400 India launch at the end of March; it will become the affordable petrol engine in the S-Class range

Mercedes-Benz’s flagship S-Class series in India ranges from starting price of Rs. 1.14 crore and goes all the up to Rs. 10.50 crore (both prices, ex-showroom Delhi). The huge price difference between the entry-level model and the high-end model is because the German manufacturer offers as much as seven products under the S badging for the Indian luxury market.

The entry-level S-Class is the 350 CDI, followed by the S 500 and its long-wheelbase derivative along with the S 63 AMG, the Maybach S 600 and the range topping S Guard models. The Stuttgart-based luxury auto maker recently launched the armoured S 600 Guard for Rs. 10.50 crore as part of the plans to launch dozen vehicles this year.

In the wake of arrival of the S 600 Guard and the Edition E, Mercedes-Benz, the leading luxury car maker in the country, is about to unveil a new engine variant dubbed as ‘S 400’ reports AutoCarIndia. The impending launch will happen at the end of March said the publication. It is more likely to be positioned between the base 350 diesel and the S 500 and therefore it could carry a price tag of around Rs. 1.3 crore.

The engine in the new S 400 variant could be adapted from the drop-top E-Class Cabriolet and it will become the affordable petrol motor up for grabs in India with a S-Class badge. The petrol motor will have a displacement of 3.0-litre and the six-cylinder V configuration in the mill will comprise direct injection technology and two turbochargers to push out a maximum power output of 329 bhp and 480 Nm of peak torque.

The S 400 variant could be sold with Mercedes’ proven 7G Tronic seven-speed automatic transmission but the likelihood of the new nine-speed automatic gearbox cannot be ruled either as it’s been glorified as the Pune-headquartered manufacturer’s future in drivetrain technology. It’s expected to have standard air suspension on all four wheels and rear wheel drive configuration with all the signature comfort and convenience the S-Class is renowned for worldwide.
