Mercedes AMG S65 Cabriolet Unveiled Ahead of Detroit Motor Show Debut; packs upgraded 6.0-litre twin-turbo V12 engine churning 621bhp

The all-new Mercedes AMG S65 Cabriolet has been revealed ahead of its world premiere at the forthcoming 2016 Detroit Motor Show in January. As a customary act that AMG would always do, the Cabriolet will be powered by a potent high-displacing mill. In a similar fashion to its Coupe sibling, this model gets the recently upgraded 6.0-litre twin-turbo V12 engine.

The 6.0-litre V12 unit engine is capable of producing a whopping maximum power output of 621bhp whilst delivering 737lb/ft of peak torque and mated to a seven-speed automatic gearbox. There are three driving modes to choose from and the Cabriolet is shod with a massive 20-inch alloy wheels and 285/35 tyres.

The interiors of the luxury four-seater open-top model will have Airscarf heating element in the backrests of the front seats and heated armrests, Mercedes’ Aircap wind protection deflector and other slew of upmarket items as seen on the S65 Coupe.

Mercedes AMG S65 Cabriolet 2As for the exteriors, the top-of-the-range S65 Cabriolet is treated with visual differentiations from other models in the S-Class Cabriolet family. It has extensive use of chrome within the air intakes sheltered in the front bumper with a redesigned unique alloy wheels and a glossy black diffuser. Besides that, V12 bi-turbo badges can be found along the flanks and a quad-trapezoidal shaped tailpipes at the back.

Since it’s a soft-top Cabriolet, it has to make do with additional weight – 175kg has been brought on by modifications done to the chassis and added bracing to replicate or other wise improve handling with the roof penalty.

Although the weight has been up to 2180kg for S65 Cabriolet and its Coupe sibling weighs less at 2035kg, Mercedes AMG claims both have similar 0-100kph time. This means the S65 Cabriolet can get from standstill to 100kph at an impressive 4.1 seconds.

This is two tenths shy of the 4WD Mercedes-AMG S63 Cabriolet 4Matic that weighs a little over 2.1tonnes and powered by a 6.2-litre twin-turbo V8 developing 577bhp and 663lb/ft of torque. The Mercedes AMG S65 Cabriolet’s top speed is electronically limited to 250kph but customers can select an optional Driver’s Package with uprated tyres that will help the Cabriolet to reach speeds of up to 300kph.

The fabric roof can be opened and closed whilst moving at speeds of up to 50kph and the whole process will take only a claimed 17 seconds. The multi-layer roof can be bought in either black, dark red or dark blue or beige. The Mercedes AMG S65 Cabriolet is being assembled and rolled out of production lines at the German manufacturer’s facility at Mannheim in Germany as opposed to the factory at AMG’s headquarters in Affalterbach.
