Maruti to launch a larger SUV with inspiration from Vitara Brezza’s success; will be based on Suzuki C platform

Maruti Suzuki is planning to launch a SUV offensive against rival brands like Mahindra and Tata. While Mahindra is known for their attractive range of SUVs, Tata Motors too is focusing on the SUV segment with various products. On the other hand, inspired by the massive success of Vitara Brezza compact SUV, Maruti Suzuki is aiming to launch a bigger and more powerful SUV in the market that will be positioned above Vitara Brezza and target Mahindra’s flagship model XUV500 and Tata Hexa.

In next three years, the Indo-Japanese automaker will launch a range of SUVs and one of them is going to be the upcoming XUV500 rival. Maruti is yet to make any official statement about it. But, people privy to the development reveals that it will be underpinned by the Suzuki C platform and production of this car could begin from 2020.

As the details about the upcoming Maruti SUV is scarce, we can assume that it would be a larger version of the Vitara Brezza with three row seating and more upmarket features inside the cabin. The car manufacturer aims to sell 20 lakh cars every year by the end of this decade, and the upcoming bigger SUV could play a very crucial role for that strategy to succeed.

This car could get a new in-house engine developed 1.5-litre engine that the automaker is currently working on in an attempt to stop using the Fiat sourced 1.3-litre DDiS diesel motor, which works in several Maruti models. Also, this SUV will surely incorporate automatic transmission option along with manual gearbox, following the brand’s plan to sell 3 lakh automatic cars by 2020.
