Maruti Swift RS Likely To Launch In March Rivalling Tiago JTP

The Tata Tiago JTP has replaced the Maruti Baleno RS as the most affordable hot hatchback, will Swift RS launch to reclaim the position?

The performance car scenario is warming up nicely in India. After the launch of the Tiago JTP, the market is now filled with performance hatchbacks likes the Maruti Baleno RS, Volkswagen GT TSI and more. The Tiago JTP has become the most affordable hot hatchback in the segment replacing the Maruti Baleno RS. To bring down the price difference, Maruti Suzuki is expected to launch the Swift RS in the market.

Now there have been a lot of rumours of Maruti Suzuki launching the Swift in the Indian market after the all-new product was launched. However, most of such reports have been played down in the past. With the launch of the Tata Tiago in the market, Maruti would want to offer a much more attractively priced hot hatchback in the segment and that’s where the Swift RS comes into the play.

The Tiago JTP is priced at Rs. 6.37 lakhs, while the Baleno RS is priced at Rs. 8.47 lakhs. There is a cushion of Rs. 2.1 lakh that Maruti would exploit to position the Swift RS in the market. It should be noted that the Swift belongs from a segment above the Tiago JTP that would make it automatically more expensive than the Tiago.

The Swift Sport is already available in many international markets but the Indian version of vehicle would be quite different from it and would be known as the Swift RS. The Swift RS would get Indian market-specific changes and would get a different engine from the Swift Sport too.

Making the Swift RS look different would be the aggressive body kit. It would be similar to the one we see on the Baleno RS. Also, the Swift would get the 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine instead of the 1.4-litre turbocharged unit that is available with the Swift Sport. The power output may increase from the Baleno’s 101 Bhp as the Tiago is much more powerful.

The 1.0-litre turbo Suzuki engine can produce a maximum of 108 Bhp and we may see a higher power output in the Swift RS. The launch is expected to happen by March 2019 and the price would hover around Rs. 7 lakh mark.
