Maruti Suzuki is conducting market study on electric vehicles; hopes for double-digit growth in next three years

Maruti Suzuki is emphasising on bigger SUVs and electric vehicles for sustainable future growth in the Indian market. The Indo-Japanese automaker is conducting study on electric vehicles of the domestic market. As we have already reported, the brand wants to take pole position in EV segment like the rest of the Indian car market when the country adopts zero emission pure electric mobility by 2030.

Speaking in an interview, Maruti Suzuki’s managing director Kenichi Ayukawa has expressed hope to reach 2 million annual production target by 2020 and he also hopes to achieve double digit growth in next three years. The company has already in process of revamping the production at its Gujarat plant in order to reach the goal.

Further in future, bigger SUVs and electric vehicles could be the brand’s big bet to grow in the domestic market. While offering small cars with fully electric powertrains means pricing for such models will be sky high affecting sales. The brand is looking for a solution to keep the pricing affordable. For that, it wants the co-operation from government that includes a clear roadmap.

Maruti Suzuki is currently in talks with its parent company Suzuki to clear the strategy regarding a new electric powered car for the domestic market. As Suzuki has partnered with Toyota in global market for the development of electric vehicles, Maruti is expected to get help from that alliance. But, the automaker also clears that achieving the similar performance as petrol and diesel models from the electric powered cars is pretty difficult.

Not only electric vehicles, Maruti is also focusing on the SUV segment with premium and bigger products. As we reported already, the carmaker will launch a Mahindra XUV500 rivaling big SUV here in late 2019. This comes with inspiration from the success of the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza.
