Maruti sold 5,500 more SUVs compared to Mahindra in April and May; success attributes to high sales of Vitara Brezza and Ertiga

Maruti Suzuki becomes the biggest SUV manufacturer in India in May 2017 beating Mahindra & Mahindra, the homegrown auto major with biggest range of SUVs. Led by the models like Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza compact SUV and Ertiga MPV, the Indo-Japanese brand has sold 5,500 units more SUVs in the domestic market in first two months of FY18 compared to Mahindra.

In April, Maruti Suzuki sold 20,638 units of UVs compared to 18,363 units of Mahindra. Last month Maruti Suzuki sold 22,608 units of UVs in the domestic market compared to Mahindra’s 19,331 units. However, in the first five months of the 2017 calendar year, Mahindra is still ahead of Maruti Suzuki by 5,000 units. But, as Maruti is motoring with growing sales number, it could beat Mahindra in near future.

The Indo-Japanese automaker has been known as the biggest player in the country with its absolute dominance in small car segment. But, as Indian buyers are showing more and more interest towards premium and larger vehicles, Maruti is shifting focus toward more upmarket products and specially towards the UV segment.

Maruti Suzuki has managed to register a 45% growth in the UV sales volume in the first FY18 so far, Mahindra on the other hand has seen a 6% decline in its sales record. Vitara Brezza played a great role behind the success of Maruti Suzuki with around more than 10,000 units selling every month. The number of sales for this car is expected to grow once the petrol model hits the market.
