Maruti Baleno, Hyundai Elite i20, Honda Jazz, VW Polo – Feb 2019 Sales Comparison

With a total dispatch of 17,944 units, the Maruti Baleno easily triumphed over its rivals Hyundai Elite i20, Honda Jazz and VW Polo

The Baleno has been the most successful B+ segment hatchback from the country’s largest selling carmaker. With a total sale of 17,944 units in February 2019, it was easily more popular than the Hyundai Elite i20, Honda Jazz and VW Polo, with the latter two selling in much lower numbers.

The Maruti Baleno posted a month-on-month sales growth of 7.7 per cent, while it posted a 13.5 per cent growth on the year-on-year basis. The growth in sales can be attributed to the introduction of the recent facelift, which brought along a refreshed styling package and some additional features to all the trims.

The Hyundai Elite i20 posted a monthly dispatch of 11,547 units, which is a pretty healthy figure but still far lower than those of the Maruti Baleno. The Elite i20 posted a sales decline of 1.7 per cent on a month-to-month basis, while its sales fell by a whopping 13.7 per cent on a year-on-year basis. The poor show, as compared to the Maruti Baleno, could be because of the car not receiving any updates since February last year.

Next in line is the VW Polo, which has clocked a monthly sales dispatch of 1,529 units. Last year same month, the premium hatchback from the German auto giant had posted a monthly dealer dispatch of 1,426 units, thereby leading to a month-on-month growth of 7.2 per cent.

Finally, the Honda Jazz, which posted a paltry sales figure of just 1,085 units. In January 2019, the B2-segment hatchback in the company’s portfolio had sold 1,545 units, which means the car has suffered a sales decline of 29.8 per cent on a month-to-month basis. On a year-on-year basis, the Honda Jazz has suffered a massive 51.9 per cent decline in its popularity.

From the above comparison, it is quite clear that the Maruti Baleno would continue to enjoy a huge lead over all its rivals. If anything, it’s only the Hyundai Elite i20 which can give somewhat strong competition to the Baleno. The VW Polo continues to enjoy a small share of the sales pie, while the Honda Jazz is fast losing its popularity.
