The XUV300 to take on the 5-star Global NCAP rated Tata Nexon, expected to launch the in February next year
Mahindra officially revealed the XUV300 ahead of the launch in February. The upcoming XUV300 is an important model for the company as future products in the entry-level segment depend on the success of it as the management is planning to shift focus.
The XUV300 is the second re-engineered SsangYong product as the first one is Alturas G4. We are comparing the new XUV300 against one of the consistent performers Tata Nexon.
Mahindra XUV300 vs Tata Nexon Design Comparison
The XUV300 is completely different from the model it is based on as the front grille is shared with new Alturas G4 and new projector headlamps with integrated DRLs. The company has given a second LED DRL, which extend toward fog lamps.
The front bumper is new with faux skid plates at front and rear while the side design gives the impression of a small car with machine cut alloy wheels. The rear gets big led tail lamps and an integrated spoiler with reflectors in the bumper.
The Nexon is so popular among customers thanks to its design theme, which looks like a concept model as the front get big headlamps along with new grille and the front bumper are new and the black plastic cladding running across the body. The rear gets LED tail lamps and a new bumper and the overall, design still looks fresh.
Mahindra XUV300 vs Tata Nexon Interior Comparison
The interior of XUV300 is shared with Tivoli as the company has given dual tone colour for the dashboard with black and beige. The design theme gives the impression of a premium car and quality is expected to be good.
The centre console gets a touchscreen infotainment system with a plethora of buttons to control various settings. The instrument cluster is new with a big MID screen in the middle and new three-spoke steering with aluminium finish.
The Nexon interior continues the modern theme as the design of the dashboard is really good with floating touch screen system in the middle and the number of buttons is low. The instrument cluster is a simple one and doesn’t look advanced like XUV300. The fit and finish of the Nexon are excellent with lots of cubby hole also.

Both Mahindra and Tata Motors has packed the interior with lots of features as both models come with touchscreen for the infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, climate control, reverse camera with parking sensors, electronically controlled exterior mirrors, automatic headlamps, keyless entry, push-button start and more.
But the XUV300 comes with segment first features like dual-zone climate control, four disc brakes and seven airbags on the top end model, sunroof is also available on the Mahindra as Tata doesn’t offer it. Even though Nexon scored full five stars in Global NCAP and both models get dual airbags and ABS with EBD as standard.
Mahindra XUV300 vs Tata Nexon Engine Comparison
Mahindra and Tata Motors are offering their respective models with petrol and diesel engine with the option of manual and automatic transmission options. The XUV300 gets the most powerful diesel engine in its class as the company has used the newly developed 1.5 L engine from Marazzo with 123 PS and 300 Nm torque. The Nexon is also powered by a 1.5 L diesel engine and it produces 108 PS and 260 Nm.
The petrol engines of both models are 1.2 L turbocharged unit but the engine on XUV300 produces 130 PS and 160 NM, while the Nexon engine puts out 108 PS and 170 Nm. The gearbox options available on both models are same as they come with a 6-speed manual as standard with AMT gearbox as an option.
Mahindra XUV300 vs Tata Nexon Mileage Comparison
The XUV300 mileage figures are yet to be revealed but we expect them to be similar to Nexon as the petrol engine is expected to return 17 kmpl and 20 kmpl for the diesel. The Nexon petrol model returns 17.88 kmpl and 23.97 kmpl for the diesel. Tata Motors is working on a hybrid version of Nexon and it is expected to be introduced in 2019 or 2020.
Mahindra XUV300 vs Tata Nexon Comparison Verdict
The XUV300 and Nexon have stylish exterior elements and are appealing in their own right. The Nexon with its coupe-ish roofline appears more modern than the XUV300 but the latter has authentic edgy yet boxy design that we really loved as well.
As for performance, the XUV300 has the certain upper hand but fuel economy wise, we think the Nexon will have the advantage. The Nexon is already sensibly priced in the segment and comes loaded with features. The same can be said for the XUV300, which makes a definitive winner out of this comparison very difficult. We will reserve our final judgement until we get to drive the XUV300 though!
