Mahindra & Mahindra has its eyes set on launching the Fortuner rivalling Y400 flagship SUV later this month but the S201 arriving in the coming months is more significant due to its volume capabilities. The largest SUV manufacturer in the country definitely needs a hit in the sub-four-metre SUV space and the S201, that could carry XUV300 nameplate, may well be the model.
The Mahindra S201 is expected to boast several segment first features including disc brakes on all wheels to harness the power. Another important equipment the S201 was spotted testing with previously was the panoramic sunroof and it could be offered in the top-of-the-range variants.
The subcompact SUV could act as a VFM proposition when it goes on sale and it is believed to be priced between Rs. 6 lakh and Rs. 10 lakh (ex-showroom). The top-end models could also come equipped with first-in-class dual zone automatic climate control system to have a definitive edge over its rivals.
Unlike the ladder frame construction on the TUV300, the Mahindra S201 will be based on monocoque chassis as SsangYong Tivoli to ensure lightness and agility as well as providing appreciable safety standards. The exterior takes plenty of inspiration from its Korean sibling while the interior is no different along with sharing several parts with recently launched Marazzo.
The front fascia is modern and appealing while the busy rear profile goes well with the overall stance of the SUV. With dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, reverse parking sensors, speed alert function, speed sensing door lock, seat belt reminder and ISOFIX child mounts as standard, the top-end variants will likely be available with as much as seven airbags.
Another main feature of the S201 is that it will likely feature the most powerful engine in its class. The 1.5-litre four-cylinder diesel powertrain used in the Marazzo could be employed to produce 123 PS and 300 Nm. It is mated to a six-speed manual transmission and perhaps AMT could be offered later.
