Mahindra is known being most aggressive when it comes to introducing electric powertrain technology. The company already has EVs like e2o Plus and e-Verito on offer and now it is planning to launch the XUV Aero as an EV. The XUV Aero concept was displayed at 2016 New Delhi Auto Expo and later at the Automobile Barcelona 2017, previewing a coupe SUV.

The launch of XUV Aero as an EV will certainly bring a new change to the Indian auto market. This will be positioned above the XUV500, Mahindra’s current flagship model. Also, the XUV Aero EV will be a premium offering from the brand with Pininfarina helping the homegrown auto major in the final design.

Mahindra’s managing director and chairman of Mahindra Electric Pawan Goenka says that the XUV Aero is one of the options for investment for the brand. Instead of aiming to roll out three or four high-end electric vehicles, Mahindra is aiming to focus on a single product and that could be the XUV Aero. It could get a very powerful 380V electric motor, on which the automaker is currently working.

This same electric powertrain could generate power for Mahindra’s future SUVs and MPVs as well. Currently, the brand has two electric motors, a 48V one and a 72 V one. But, none of these smaller units are sufficient to generate power for a big car like XUV Aero.

The XUV Aero concept takes design inspiration from the Mahindra XUV500. But, its swooping coupeish roofline makes the car very distinctive. Also, upon arrival the Mahindra XUV Aero would offer a very premium vibe thanks to its design and interior features. Mahindra enjoys the privilege to roll out first fully electric Indian car. That experience will certainly help the brand in making the XUV Aero as an EV.
