Mahindra has sold only 45 units of petrol XUV 500 till now which is lower than the volumes expected by the company
Mahindra is one of the manufacturers which was hit very hard with diesel rule as the company had only diesel engines for most of the best selling products. The 2.0 L rule for diesel engines was also not good which again took away customers from the SUVs. So Mahindra decided to develop a new petrol engine for its SUV range.
The Indian manufactured introduced the new petrol engine on XUV 500 in December 2017. Even though the company was not expecting numbers similar to diesel engine model, but the reality was even harder as the company has sold only 45 units of petrol XUV 500 till now which is lower than the volumes expected by the company.
Mahindra sold 10,198 units of XUV 500 between December 2017 and April 2018, which means than petrol model account for just 0.44 percent of total sales. The petrol variant of XUV 500 is not available in all dealerships across the country as they known that majority of people won’t choose the petrol version as people prefer diesel model for big vehicles.
Usually the petrol version is available in metro cities as most people use their cars in city and the km they drive each month is considerably lower. Another reason for people choosing diesel model is because of the fuel efficiency and the range which it offer. Even though diesel model is pricier than petrol model but in long run it offers more value.
Mahindra is not going to discontinue petrol variant of XUV 500 yet as the main focus of this variant is for exports. The XUV 500 is exported to different countries and especially in Middle East where petrol model is more popular. The petrol engine is 2.2 L mHawk unit producing 140 bhp of power at 4,500 rpm and 320 Nm of torque at 2000 rpm.
The Indian manufacturer is only offering 6 speed automatic transmission with the petrol model. The XUV 500 petrol engine doesn’t get four wheel drive system also and it is available in a single variant which is priced at Rs. 15.50 lakh (Ex-Showroom). The top end diesel variant of XUV 500 is the most popular choice among customers.
