Pininfarina to become a manufacturer under Mahindra’s supervision; an all-electric sedan could be the first product

Mahindra is aiming to grab a sizeable share in the global EV market. In attempt to do so, the homegrown auto major is trying to pit the famous Italian designer company Pininfarina as a rival against American EV maker Tesla. The first product from Pininfarina could be an electric sedan and it could be unveiled during the course of this year.

Interestingly, Pininfarina showcased the H600 sedan concept at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show and we can expect the upcoming electric powered sedan to come inspired by this concept model. However, the Italian brand and its Indian parent company are still tight lipped about the launch of the new product.

With Pininfarina ready to come out as a manufacturer it would design, develop and sell pure electric luxury cars only reportedly. Plan to become a manufacturer is not new for Pininfarina, as this was a dream of the company’s founder Battista Farina.

As it seems, the Italian design house is ready to fulfill the dream after nearly 90 years of its establishment. Speaking about the upcoming electric cars under the brand, they will use Mahindra’s four years of expertise developed in Formula E along with technologies for electric powertrain.

While the first electric model from Pininfarina is likely to be a sedan, we are likely to see a SUV rolling out as well. Expect this SUV to use Mahindra’s huge experience of building utility vehicles. Also, initially USA and Western European markets are on target for these electric vehicles according to previous reports.

During a conversation at the recently concluded 2018 Geneva Motor Show, Chief Executive Paulo Pininfarina said Mahindra was working on a luxury EV strategy, pointing towards Pininfarina being the beneficiary.

The company already showcased what it is capable of with the H2 Speed Hydrogen and it is intended to produce the vehicle in limited numbers. International media reports suggest Pininfarina could publicly announce its plans during Formula E race in Rome on April 14.
