Mahindra S201 sub-4 metre SUV is based on SsangYong Tivoli’s platform; will challenge Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza upon arrival
Mahindra has been making quite a buzz in the last few months with its upcoming sub-four metre SUV that is codenamed S201. The SUV is targeting compact SUV segment’s bestseller Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza. Test mules of the upcoming Mahindra SUV have been spotted on Indian roads several times giving us a preview of the much awaited model.
No wonder, we all are eager to see the car in flesh after seeing loads of rendering images and spyshots. What’s interesting about this SUV is that it could start a new trend for the homegrown brand. Despite making well capable SUVs for quite long time, Mahindra vehicles have not been termed as stylish and appealing, but S201 could change that.
Before the homegrown auto major reveals the new SUV, let us take a close look at the so far known facts:

Mahindra S201 is expected to be available in both petrol and diesel engine options. The petrol engine under the hood of this car could be a 1.5-litre engine that would be capable of churning out power output between 90 bhp and 120 bhp, while torque output would range between 130 Nm and 150 Nm.
On the diesel front, the car would get a tried and tested 1.99-litre diesel engine that would kick out 140 bhp of peak power and 320 Nm of peak torque. Transmission options would include a 5-speed manual gearbox and a 6-speed automatic gearbox as well. Expect the petrol and diesel engines to generate fuel efficiency between 17 kmpl and 19 kmpl.
Mahindra S201 Exterior
Mahindra S201 is expected to come wearing a stylish and attractive design, not like the current crop of models from the brand. Apart from being based on the SsangYong Tivoli’s X100 platform, this car has received design inputs from Mahindra owned famous Italian design house Pininfarina. Thanks to this joint effort, it would appear with an eye-catching design.
Up front, the car is expected to get a large front grille in line with the new XUV500. There would be chrome garnished vertical slats enhancing its aggressiveness. Apart from that, it will get projector headlamps with integrated LED daytime running lights. A muscular front bumper would be there with integrated fog lamps.
Moving to the side profile, there will be sporty and bold alloy wheels, black cladding and flared wheel arches. Apart from that, there would be turn indicator integrated ORVMs, blackened glass area. Sporty roof rails could be there as well, which will certainly add more style. At the back, there will be compact taillights with LED inserts and a roof spoiler. A bold bumper will be there as well. We may also see some customisation option being offered by Mahindra for this car that will include dual-tone body paint, sporty graphics etc.

Mahindra is yet to reveal the dimensional figures of this SUV, but this will come bearing length below 4 metre for sure. Mahindra S201 would arrive with a length close to 3,999 mm, while width is likely to be around 1,790 mm. Also, it would get a height around 1,600 mm and a wheelbase around 2,500 mm. There could be a round clearance of around 200 mm and boot space capacity is expected to be around 330 litres.
Mahindra S201 Interior
Mahindra S201 is expected to come with stylish and appealing interior, just like the exterior. There will be a multifunction three-spoke steering wheel, analog and digital display consisting instrument cluster. The instrument cluster could receive mood lighting, which will certainly add zing to the cabin. A layered looking dashboard will be there with a large touchscreen infotainment system.
As Mahindra promised earlier, it will introduce Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in all its future cars, these modern connectivity features will be there in S201 for sure. Apart from that, it will also ensure comfortable journey experience for the occupants with ample space. Seat and upholstery will get upmarket quality materials.
Mahindra S201 Rivals
Biggest rival against Mahindra S201 will be the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, which currently leads the subcompact SUV segment in Indian market. Apart from that, the upcoming Mahindra sub-four metre SUV will also challenge Ford EcoSport, Tata Nexon and Honda WR-V.
