Mahindra Inferno (Y400) VS Toyota Fortuner Comparison

Our Mahindra Inferno (Y400) vs Toyota Fortuner comparison reviews the price, specs, mileage, and design of the two SUVs

Mahindra and Mahindra is about to launch the G4 Ssangyong Rexton in India. The large SUV, which has been codenamed as Y400, was until now expected to be called the XUV700. However, PV Goenka, MD, M&M has made it clear that the new SUV will not have an alphanumeric name.

Our sources have revealed that the Toyota Fortuner-rival could called the Inferno. Here’s our Mahindra Inferno (Y400) vs Toyota Fortuner comparison review to see how the new model fairs against the highly popular Japanese SUV.

Mahindra Inferno (Y400) vs Toyota Fortuner Price Comparison

Model Price Range
Mahindra Inferno Rs 24 lakh to Rs 28 lakh
Toyota Fortuner Rs 27.27 lakh to Rs 32.97 lakh

While Toyota Kirloskar Motor is known to price its models in a way that they command a premium over the rivals, the same can’t be said about Mahindra. Its latest model, the Marazzo, is priced very competitively. It has a base price of Rs 9.99 lakh, which makes it several lakhs cheaper than its immediate competition, the Toyota Innova Crysta. Similarly, we expect the Mahindra Inferno to be priced at least a few lakhs cheaper than the Toyota Fortuner.

However, let’s not forget that the Mahindra Inferno will be brought to India via CKD route, which means the company will not be able to price the India-spec Ssangyong Rexton too aggressively. Still, we expect it to cost at least Rs 3 lakh lower than the Fortuner. Prices of the new SUV are expected to start at Rs 24 lakh. On the other hand, the base model of the Fortuner costs Rs 27.27 lakh.

This should mean that all those restricted by budget might be tempted to pick the Y400 over the Fortuner or the even the Endeavor. Hence, it’s clear to see that the upcoming SUV is the winner of this part of our Mahindra Inferno (Y400) vs Toyota Fortuner comparison review.

Mahindra Inferno (Y400) vs Toyota Fortuner Specs Comparison

Model Mahindra Inferno Toyota Fortuner
Engine Capacity 2.2-litre turbocharged diesel 2.8 litre turbocharged diesel / 2.7 litre petrol
Maximum Power 183 bhp 177 bhp/ 166 bhp
Peak Torque 420 Nm 420 Nm (MT), 450 Nm (AT)/245 Nm
Transmission 6-speed manual, 7-speed automatic 6-speed manual, 6-speed automatic

The specs of the Mahindra Inferno (Y400) will be at par with what the Toyota Fortuner rivals. However, while the Fortuner offers a petrol engine, the Inferno will be available with a diesel engine only. Also, in comparison to the Fortuner’s 2.8-litre diesel engine, the Inferno’s engine will displace 2.2-litres only.

Still, in spite of the smaller size, it will offer 183 bhp, which will be higher than the Fortuner’s 177 bhp. In terms of torque, the Inferno will offer 420 Nm, which will be exactly what the Fortuner offers with the manual transmission. With the automatic, it offers 30 Nm more.

The petrol engine of the Fortuner offers 177 bhp and 450 Nm. The Inferno will have a Mercedes-sourced 7-speed automatic transmission while the Fortuner will have a 6-speed AT. Those looking for a large SUV that is powered by petrol will have no option but to pick the Fortuner between the two.

However, a majority of buyers prefer a diesel engine and the Y400’s 2.2-litre diesel motor is more than a match for the Fortuner’s 2.8-litre motor. It also holds an advantage in terms of transmission due to its 7-speed AT from Mercedes. Both the models will offer 4WD.

Mahindra Inferno (Y400) vs Toyota Fortuner Mileage Comparison

Model Mahindra Inferno Toyota Fortuner
ARAI Mileage 15.50 kmpl (est) 14.24 kmpl (diesel MT), 12.9 kmpl (diesel AT), 10.01 kmpl (petrol MT), 10.26 kmpl (petrol AT)

The Toyota Fortuner offers a maximum ARAI-certified mileage of 14.24 kmpl. The least mileage is offered by the petrol manual version, which offers 10.01 kmpl. The Mahindra Inferno gets the same diesel engine as the Ssangyong Rexton G4, and hence, its fuel economy will be largely similar.

Going by the fuel efficiency figures of the G4 Rexton available online, it’s clear that the Y400 will offer at least 15.50 kmpl. This will give it a clear advantage over the Toyota Fortuner.

Mahindra Inferno (Y400) vs Toyota Fortuner Dimensions Comparison

Model Mahindra Inferno  Toyota Fortuner
Overall length 4850 mm 4795 mm
Overall width 1960 mm 1855 mm
Overall height 1800 mm 1835 mm
Wheelbase 2,865 mm 2745 mm
Ground Clearance 220 mm

The Mahindra Inferno is a bigger model than the Toyota Fortuner. It is longer and even wider. It also has a larger wheelbase. The only area where the Fortuner gets the better of the Y400 is the overall height.

The Japanese SUV is 35 mm taller. While it offers a ground clearance of 220 mm, we are yet to become aware of the GC that the Indian Rexton will offer. Hence, the G4 Rexton-based SUV is the winner of this part of Mahindra Inferno (Y400) vs Toyota Fortuner comparison.

Mahindra Inferno (Y400) vs Toyota Fortuner Features Comparison

The Mahindra Inferno (Y400) will offer 20-inch alloy wheels, while the Toyota Fortuner has only 18-inch alloy rims. The Indian version of the G4 Ssangyong Rexton will also provide an electric sunroof, which is again a feature that the Fortuner doesn’t offer. Another advantage that the Inferno will have over the Toyota Fortuner will be its bigger touchscreen system that will have Android Auto and Apple CarpPlay support. The display will measure 8-inch in diameter.

The touchscreen unit of the Fortuner measures 7-inch in diameter and does not support either Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Also, the Indian Rexton will offer a higher number of safety features, which is an essential aspect in which the Japanese SUV will lag.

Mahindra Inferno (Y400) vs Toyota Fortuner Design Comparison

The Mahindra Inferno (Y400) aka XUV700 will look exactly like the G4 Ssangyong Rexton. The only difference will be courtesy of new Mahindra badges and a new Mahindra front grille. Rest, the car will look exactly like the Rexton SUV sold abroad.

This isn’t a bad thing as such. The latest generation Ssangyong Rexton is a handsome SUV that has massive street presence owing to its large dimensions. Its stylish headlights, M Class-like side profile, bold creases, and overall modern design gives it an enormous street presence.

In comparison, the Toyota Fortuner looks a touch more futuristic. However, it’s a pretty common sight now and hence, will not command the kind of street presence one can expect from the Inferno. It has sharp creases, tight surfaces, and looks very stylish. It also seems a bit more premium than the Rexton.

However, the design is a matter of personal choice. Those who want something slightly futuristic can opt for the Fortuner while those looking for a handsome SUV with massive street presence can go for the Y400.
