Our Mahindra Inferno (Y400) vs Ford Endeavour comparison reviews the price, specs, mileage, and design of the two SUVs
Mahindra and Mahindra, the largest selling UV maker in India, will launch the G4 Ssangyong Rexton in the coming months. Till recently, the new model was speculated to be called the XUV700. However, PV Goenka, MD, M&M has made it clear that the new SUV will not have an alphanumeric name.
As per our reliable sources, the upcoming Ford Endeavour and Toyota Fortuner-rival will launch as the Inferno. Here’s our Mahindra Inferno (Y400) vs Ford Endeavour comparison review to show you how the latest offering from Mahindra stacks up against the American SUV.
Mahindra Inferno (Y400) vs Ford Endeavour Price Comparison
Model | Price Range |
Mahindra Inferno | Rs 24 lakh to Rs 28 lakh |
Ford Endeavour | Rs.26.33 lakh – 32.81 lakh |
While we have always felt that the Ford Endeavour has been priced well, the Mahindra XUV700 (Y400), nay, the Mahindra Inferno could change the entire dynamics of the segment. Going by the prices of the recently launched Marazzo, whose range starts at Rs 9.99 lakh, we can expect a really attractive price tag for the so-called XUV700. Hence, the prices of the Inferno will undercut that of the Endeavour by some margin.
That said, one should remember that the Mahindra Inferno will come to India through the CKD route. This will tie the hands of the company from pricing the model too competitively. Still, we expect the new SUV to be priced around Rs 2.5 lakh lower than the Endeavour. So, the starting price of the Inferno should be kept around Rs 24 lakh. On the other hand, the entry-level variant of the Endeavour costs Rs 32.81 lakh.
The difference in prices means that all those who have been restricted by budget can simply opt for the Y400 over the Endeavour or the Fortuner. With this, it gets clear that the new Mahindra SUV is the winner of this round of our Mahindra Inferno (Y400) vs Ford Endeavour comparison review.
Mahindra Inferno (Y400) vs Ford Endeavour Specs Comparison
Model | Mahindra Inferno | Ford Endeavour |
Engine Capacity | 2.2-litre turbocharged diesel | 2.2-litre / 3.2-litre, 4-cylinder turbocharged diesel |
Maximum Power | 183 bhp | 158 bhp / 195 bhp |
Peak Torque | 420 Nm | 385Nm / 470Nm |
Transmission | 6-speed manual, 7-speed automatic | 7-speed automatic |
With an engine size of 2.2-litre, the Mahindra Inferno finds itself slotted between the two engine variants of the Ford Endeavour in the aspect of performance. Neither of the two models offers a petrol variant, but the Ford SUV is available with two diesel engines – 2.2-lite and 3.2-litre. Both the models will be available with a 7-speed automatic transmission. Additionally, the Inferno can even offer a 6-speed manual transmission.
In spite of the smaller size, the motor of the XUV700 (Y400) outputs 183 bhp, which is higher than the 158 bhp that the Endeavour’s 2.2-litre engine outputs. Also, it’s only 12 bhp lesser than what the 3.2-litre engine of the Endy produces. The Inferno will offer a peak torque of 420 Nm, which is, again, higher than the 385 Nm that the smaller engine of the Endeavour offers but lower than what the bigger engine provides.
The 3.2-litre engine of the Ford Endeavour offers a maximum power of 195 bhp along with a peak torque of 470 Nm. It comes mated to a 7-speed torque converter automatic transmission. In case outright power is all that you want, the Endeavour makes slightly more sense. Practically speaking, however, the Inferno is at par with the Endeavour in this department.
What’s interesting is that both the models offer a 4×4 system and a 7-speed automatic transmission. While the Ford Endeavour has excellent off-roading capabilities, we are sure that the Mahindra Inferno won’t be far behind. Plus, one should note that such large SUVs are seldom taken off the road.
Mahindra Inferno (Y400) vs Ford Endeavour Mileage Comparison
Model | Mahindra Inferno | Ford Endeavour |
ARAI Mileage | 15.50 kmpl (est) | 12.62 kmpl (2.2-litre)

The 2.2-litre version of the Ford Endeavour offers a peak ARAI mileage of 12.62 kmpl. This figure comes down to 10.91 kmpl for the 3.2-litre version. On the other hand, international reports suggest that the Mahindra Inferno, which will be a rebadged G4 Ssangyong Rexton will have a fuel economy of around 15.5 kmpl in the test conditions.
Hence, going by the fuel economy ratings of the new Rexton that can be found online, it becomes quite apparent that the new Mahindra model will offer a higher mileage than the Endeavour.
Mahindra Inferno (Y400) vs Ford Endeavour Dimensions Comparison
Model | Mahindra Inferno | Ford Endeavour |
Overall length | 4850 mm | 4892 mm |
Overall width | 1960 mm | 1860 mm |
Overall height | 1800 mm | 1837 mm |
Wheelbase | 2865 mm | 2859 mm |
Ground Clearance | 225 mm |
While the new Mahindra Inferno is a bigger vehicle than the Toyota Fortuner, it’s slightly smaller than the Ford Endeavour. That said, it does end up having a slightly longer wheelbase in spite of having a lower overall length. It’s also lower in height. However, it’s considerably wider, which should lead to a roomy interior.
The American SUV has a ground clearance of 225 mm, which is commendable. We are yet to get to know the GC of the India-spec Rexton. But we are sure it won’t be much lesser or higher than what the Endy offers. While the Endeavour is longer, the Inferno outclasses it in terms of wheelbase and width. Hence, it’s the winner of this part of our Mahindra Inferno (Y400) vs Ford Endeavour comparison.
Mahindra Inferno (Y400) vs Ford Endeavour Features Comparison

Both the models will be available with an electric sunroof and a touchscreen infotainment systems that support Android Auto and Apple CarpPlay support. The touch displays for both the SUVs will measure 8-inch in diameter.
However, an area where the G4 Ssangyong Rexton will have a clear advantage over the Endeavour will be the safety features. It’s internationally available with autonomous emergency braking, lane departure warning and a total of 9 airbags against the seven airbags that the Ford Endeavour offers.
Mahindra Inferno (Y400) vs Ford Endeavour Design Comparison
In terms of appearance, the Mahindra Inferno (Y400) aka XUV700 looks almost the same as the G4 Ssangyong Rexton. The only difference in the appearance will be due to a new grille with horizontal slats and Mahindra badges on the exterior and the interior of the new SUV. The remaining vehicle will look totally like the Korean SUV it is based on.
We aren’t complaining, really, for the current generation of the Ssangyong Rexton is a well-designed model that has tremendous street presence due to a modern design and large dimensions. The most attractive points of the design include stylish headlamps, M Class-like side profile, bold creases, and a bold stance.
In comparison, the Ford Endeavour looks like a proper American SUV, with a handsome exterior and a butch styling. The aggressive stance, an abundance of chrome and the boxy silhouette lead to a very bold design that seems to have a universal appeal. The Endeavour is definitely among the most handsome SUVs on sale in India today.
That said, the design is subjective to one’s tastes. Hence, those who want a new design that is bold yet a bit flashy can go for the Mahindra Inferno. On the other hand, the ones looking for a brute-ish SUV can opt for the Ford Endeavour.
