Mahindra is developing a new small capacity BSVI petrol engine and it might power the Mahindra-Ford jointly developed SUV

Ford and Mahindra announced their new partnership to develop connected car solution and powertrain as the American manufacturer is looking to turn its Indian subsidiary into profit even though the company has more than two decades of experience in the Indian market. Both companies have agreed to expand the powertrain deal further.

Mahindra is going to develop a small capacity petrol engine, which will be used in future and existing models of both companies. The new engine is expected to make its debut in 2020 and the Indian government is planning to introduce BSVI emissions norms at the same time, so the new engine will meet the stringent norm also.

The new small-displacement petrol engine might power the upcoming mid-size SUV from Ford, which is jointly developed with Mahindra. We can expect the engine to produce good power output along with class-leading efficiency also and the company could add the micro-hybrid system to this new engine to make it extract more from each litre of petrol.

The petrol engine might come with both manual and automatic transmission, Ford could use this engine in International models also. The company recently introduced new Dragon series 1.2 L and 1.5 L petrol engines in Freestyle and EcoSport, both these new generation units offer more power than predecessors along with good mileage also.

Ford has spent lots of money on the development of new generation Dragon series engines, so we will have to wait and see how the company plan to get back the investment. The upcoming compact SUV might be powered by the same diesel engine from Marazzo and it is BSVI complaint also.

The compact SUV will be based on the Mahindra platform and R&D will be done by both companies, which will reduce cost. Mahindra and Ford are also working on a telematics control unit as part of the new connected vehicle solutions. The future products include a new electric vehicle and portable compact SUV.
