Mahindra and Ford signed a global partnership to explore electric vehicle technology; Mahindra’s electric sedan likely to use Ford’s underpinning

Mahindra has tied up with Ford in order to use synergies to explore electric vehicle technology and grow bigger in Indian and in overseas markets as well. The homegrown auto major claims talks with Ford are moving towards a positive direction. As we have reported earlier, the American auto maker will use Mahindra’s electric powertrain technology for its India-spec future EVs, while Mahindra will use Ford’s global vehicle architecture.

The upcoming Mahindra electric sedan is expected to be underpinned by Ford Ka platform. This vehicle platform comes as a shorter and cheaper derivative of the global market-spec Ka+. The Ka architecture also underpins cars like Ford Figo and Ford Aspire. Mahindra aims to use this same underpinning for its future EVs.

Apart from Indian market, both the automakers will use their synergies in global market-spec products as well. This way, both the brands will be able to share technologies and components in order to increase profitability and grow the business further. Speaking about their partnership in India, both the companies are discussing connected car technologies, product development, sales and distribution issues alongside electric powertrain tech.

Interestingly, For and Mahindra were partners in India back in 1990’s and reviving the partnership after nearly two decades is a very positive sign for the Indian market as well. As the Indian market is thriving towards zero emission pure electric mobility and targeting to achieve that by 2030, such a partnership is expected to boost the initiative, as both the automakers play crucial role in the domestic market.

Also, the news of both the brands working positively towards their partnership comes as a welcome move after Tata Motors and Volkswagen’s proposed partnership didn’t work out, as both the companies couldn’t find benefit from their alliance. While Mahindra and Ford are yet to disclose further details about the development of their alliance, we are hopeful to learn more in coming days.
