Mahindra Could Expand Into Indonesia And Russia Courtesy Of Ford (Mahindra-Ford partnership)

Ford’s bigger footprint across the globe will come in handy to help Mahindra as crucial markets in South East Asia as well as Russia are targetted

Mahindra & Mahindra has reportedly been leveraging its association with American auto giant Ford by looking at opportunities to enter into highly potential markets like Russia, Indonesia and make profound inroads into South Africa.

As previously reported, the Mumbai-based manufacturer has partnered Ford in the areas of engineering, development, sourcing, manufacturing and retailing among others. Mahindra’s Managing Director Pawan Goenka has said that all the possibilities are in initial stage as more room for further discussions are there.

Ford’s bigger footprint across the globe will come in handy to help Mahindra as crucial markets in South East Asia as well as Russia are targetted. It is important to note that Mahindra has made a sizeable investment in South Africa underlining its focus, while mulling over tying up with Ford in terms of aftermarket support and distribution.

Ever since Mahindra and Ford announced their partnership, things have been going in the positive direction according to both brands and a range of new products are expected to arrive by the end of this decade and afterwards.

Electrification and connected cars are other main departments of mutual development as well. It has been already confirmed that a mid-size SUV is in the pipeline. Based on Mahindra’s platform, Ford’s expertise in research and development will play a key role in the project.

A speculation is that each brand will have its own version of the SUV, probably going by the badge engineering route. The companies appear to be working on evaluating the possibility a compact SUV as well. Powertrain sharing could also be part of the deal ensuring Mahindra to supply engines to power some of the vehicles from Ford in the not-so-distant future.

Back to the mid-size Mahindra SUV, it is expected to share plenty of components with Ford’s version and an zero-emission vehicle based on Ford Aspire sedan using EV powertrain could also be considered.
