Mahindra electric division seems to receive huge investment in electric powertrain technology as well as future battery-powered products

Mahindra & Mahindra has confirmed that it will be investing huge sum of money for the future technology involved in electric mobility. The news comes hot on the heels of reports that Mahindra was pulling out of the UK market due to unsatisfied sales figures and that it had effectively withdrawn its operations completely.

Encouragingly, Mahindra is one of the few Indian manufacturers to have been working hard on the electrification solutions. Its serious commitment in Formula E electric racing championship since the beginning is a prime example of that. In a BSE filing, the company has affirmed that it will be introducing electric powertrain to some of its existing models or via subsidiary.

The subsidiary could indicate the products from Mahindra Electric division. Although the size of the investment has not been known, it is believed that the money will be utilised to develop the capacity in which the electric powertrains are products as well as bringing new EVs on to the ground.

According to the statement, the “high-end electric powertrains” will play a significant role in the Group’s eco-friendly lineup in the future. Rumours suggest that Mahindra appears to be working on increasing its manufacturing capacity of the EVs. It could be ramped up to over 5,000 units per month as opposed to the existing production of 200 examples by 2019.

Mahindra e-Supro

Mahindra currently has products like the E2o Plus, e-Supro and e-Verito in the domestic market. However, none has so far made a revelation to make the conventional customers snub the IC-engined cars and move towards electric vehicles. With the new investment, the largest SUV maker in the country will be aiming to make the e-vehicles more accessible and convenient enough.

The Research & Development centre in Bengaluru employs 200 workers on different mediums of the electric vehicles and it could face a substantial strengthening in numbers in the years to come. Mahindra hopes to be front-runner sticking by the transformation via National Electric Mobility Mission Plan 2030 organised by the central government.
