Mahindra has launched the new e2o three-door electric car for the UK market with a rated range of 79 miles (127 km). Specifically designed for urban commuting, it is available online to be purchased with deliveries beginning in May. The successor to the G-Wiz comes in two versions namely the e2o City and e2o TechX priced at £12,995 (Rs. 12.3 lakh)and £15,995 (Rs. 15.1 lakh) respectively – twice as much costly as the Indian-spec model. But there are plenty of upgrades with improved interior, equipment and battery.
For instance, the range-topping TechX features Revive remote emergency recharging, touchscreen infotainment, reversing camera, telematics, leather seats, a rapid charging port and alloy wheels. Competition wise it’s more expensive than the Renault Twizy but cheaper than the Renault Zoe and Nissan Leaf. Mahindra will introduce hire purchase, PCP and business leasing options as part of financial schemes.
The new e2o four-seater can top 63 mph (101 kmph) and is claimed to achieve 25 mph (40 kmph) from standstill in 4.9 seconds while 0-50 mph (0 to 80 kmph) is said to take 18 seconds. Powering the e2o is a 13.9 kWh lithium-ion battery with 42 bhp electric motor and has 67 lb ft of torque available instantly. It takes nine hours to get fully charged from empty and the e2o TechX’s fast charge option will help it charge in just 90 minutes.
Test drives can be booked in several parts of the country including London and alongside online purchase, the aftermarket process will also be digital according to Mahindra. It is estimated to have 90% of maintenance, including servicing, can be carried out at home. Mobile vans are employed by the Indian company for ease of service.
The multiple techs features in the e2o are remotely controllable pre-heating and cooling of the car, remote emergency charging giving driver up to 8-mile range when battery depletes, onboard sensors sending information to Mahindra for remote customer alerts and health monitoring, etc.
The touchscreen infotainment system on the TechX model provides satellite navigation with charge point locations. Bluetooth, built-in reversing camera, Wi-Fi hotspot, USB, SD card and DAB radio are also present. Safety is emphasised with dual SRS airbags, ABS, ESP and standard regenerative braking system.
