Mahindra confirms SsangYong X100 based SUV as the Indian automaker works on two new platforms

Mahindra is developing an all new SUV based on the SsangYong X100 platform. The same SsangYong X100 platform is shared by the India bound Tivoli. Mahindra’s executive director Dr. Pawan Goenka has confirmed that the new Mahindra SUV will arrive within 14 to 15 months. Apart from that, the Indian automaker is working on another platform as well, which would come later.

There is very little information available about the new Mahindra SUV. But it would be positioned below the SsangYong Tivoli. Also the new SUV would be powered by a 1.5 litre petrol engine. This engine is also expected to be available under the Mahindra TUV300 and NuvoSport. The new SUV might come available with a diesel engine in form of 1.6 litre unit of Tivoli.

Dr. Pawan Goenka has also confirmed, that the automaker might launch a sporty version of its range topping SUV XUV500. But that will depend on the demand. Apart from that Mahindra is working hard to make an all electric vehicle for the global market. The Mahindra owned Italian design house Pininfarina is working closely with its parent company for the electric vehicle.

Incidentally, Mahindra has been bringing up some out of the box idea in recent times. It has showcased the XUV Aero concept at the 2016 New Delhi Auto Expo earlier this year. The XUV Aero concept gave us the preview of a coupe SUV, which might be the sporty XUV500, Dr. Pawan Goenka has hinted.

Meanwhile the Indian automaker is vehemently working on electric cars. It also became the first Indian automaker to introduce two fully electric vehicles. Earlier Mahindra launched the E2O electric hatchback, while few weeks ago it launched its first electric compact sedan e-Verito. Also on card is an autonomous electric vehicle, which the Mahindra and its subsidiary brand are working on presently.
