Mahindra Alturas G4 SUV (Fortuner Rival) Bookings Open, Launch This 24th

Mahindra Alturas G4 will compete against Toyota Fortuner and Ford Endeavour in the full-size SUV segment with overseas expertise from SsangYong

Mahindra has been making moves to launch SUVs in new segments and it can anticipate volumes out of them. The largest SUV maker in the country had long been rumoured to introduce a new flagship model that would be positioned above the XUV500. Especially the success of XUV500 would have brought a string of enthusiasm for Mahindra to move up the ladder and target premium audiences it has never faced before.

Ever since the buyout of SsangYong, the South Korean SUV specialist that put into production the first-ever monocoque SUV, its progress in international markets cannot be undermined.

Much like Tata taking advantage of technologies developed at JLR, Mahindra is trying to leverage the expertise SsangYong possesses and utilise it to set the cash registers ringing. SsangYong debuted the latest generation version of the well-received Rexton at the 2017 Seoul Motor Show in front of Mahindra’s chairman, Anand Mahindra.

It holds plenty of significance for the Indian market as it is rebadged to be used as Mahindra’s flagship SUV. codenamed Y400, it will be rolled out of the production lines carrying Alturas badge. Having made debut at the 2018 Auto Expo under Mahindra badge, it is heading to showrooms with a launch on November 24. Here is everything you need to know about the upcoming Mahindra Alturas: 

Mahindra Alturas Exterior and Design

The front fascia adorns a signature tooth grille with Mahindra emblem embossed at the centre and connects the sleek headlamps with LED Daytime Running Lights. The bonnet has prominent character lines and there’s a massive bumper sheltering the horizontal fog lamps and black skid plate hiding underneath the big air intake to emphasise the SUV character.

The side profile has muscular stance with sporty alloy wheels and lower side skirts while the body-coloured wing mirrors with turn indicators can be electrically adjustable. Just as the LIV-2 concept which gave rise to the new-gen Rexton, the Mahindra Alturas (or probably Mahindra Rexton) is a seven-seater and sits on a ladder-frame construction.

The silver lining on the window surrounds and a sturdy roof rail are expected on the production model as seen in the spy images while a compact rear profile will wrap the exterior of this masculine premium SUV.

Mahindra Alturas Dimension

With the tall profile, the interior is expected to be more or at least as spacious as its competition considering the 120 mm wheelbase the LIV-2 concept had over the Fortuner. It measures 4,850 mm in length, 1,960 mm in width, 1,825 mm in height and has a wheelbase of 2,865 mm with 2,095 kg kerb weight.

Rest assured, it will have a latest touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, a multi-spoke steering wheel with mounted controls and driver assistance technologies aiding the off-roading capabilities. The cabin will be a trademark Mahindra with good premium materials accompanying a comfortable seating layout.

Mahindra Alturas Engine, Specs, Mileage

The power unit could be a new 2.0-litre petrol motor jointly developed with SsangYong making 220 bhp of peak power and 225 Nm of peak torque. Or it could be the 2.2 L e-XDi220 LET engine making 187 PS and 420 Nm in the current Rexton. The Mahindra Alturas will come in both two-wheel and four-wheel drive configurations with manual and automatic transmission options.

Mahindra Alturas India Launch

Mahindra was numb over whether to bring the Rexton or not to India due to cost concerns earlier. But it has firmly decided to enter it under Mahindra badge and we will be witnessing a commercial launch on November 24.

Mahindra Alturas India Price

To reduce the production costs, it will have welding processes and painting carried out locally while the amount of localisation will be at a top level to keep aggressive pricing. Powertrain and body panels will be imported from Korean suppliers.

Excitingly, the Alturas will be priced competitively against the segment leader Toyota Fortuner. With reported undercut in price by Rs. 3-4 lakh, we can expect it to be priced in the vicinity of Rs. 23-25 lakh (ex-showroom).

Mahindra Alturas Key Rivals

It will obviously compete against the likes of class-leading Toyota Fortuner, Ford Endeavour Isuzu MU-X and Mitsubishi Pajero Sport.
