Lucas TVS to launch its made-in-India tractions motors in 2019; aims to grab a good chunk in Indian EV market

TVS Group owned Lucas TVS is gearing up to launch traction motor in India for the electric three-wheelers. The automotive electrical manufacturer has revealed that it will start production of the traction motors from 2019. The company aims to set up production line in one of its seven factories. With this move, TVS aims to grab a good chunk in the Indian EV market that is about to grow significantly in coming years.

Not only in India, TVS Group is also aiming to sell the traction motors to other auto manufacturers across the world. Demands for electric rickshaws and three-wheelers are increasing rapidly here as such vehicles provide last mile connectivity solution to a large number of people across India. This comes in line with central government’s push for zero emission electric mobility across the country.

Having been working on electric mobility for four years, Lucas TVS sees the Mission EV 2030 as a great opportunity to strike a new ground. Interestingly, not only in three-wheeler segment, TVS is also working on electric two-wheeler as well. The homegrown company is preparing to showcase an electric variant of its popular Jupiter scooter at the upcoming 2018 Delhi Auto Expo scheduled in early February.

Meanwhile alongside working on solution for future electric vehicles, Lucas TVS is also seeking a clear roadmap from Indian government that will help it to work on the project more efficiently. Interestingly, this is not the demand from Lucas TVS, but several other auto manufacturers present in the country have also expressed their concern about lack of strategic roadmap for the development of electric vehicles in India.

Lucas TVS wants Indian government to make necessary changes in the regulations to make the EV manufacturing and selling easier here. Also, it wants the government to give incentives to the automakers in order to encourage EV manufacturing.

Meanwhile, Indian government is working on FAME 2 scheme that will help the customers to purchase electric vehicles. Under this scheme, EV buyers will receive incentive in multiple stages. Apart from that, government is also working on building and improving infrastructure for the future electric vehicles.
