Lightning Motorcycles will test its electric bike from Los Angeles to San Francisco without a recharge; test to take place during late this summer
Lightning Motorcycles is all set to test its electric bike with an impressive 644 km range. The bike is expected to run during late summer or early fall from Los Angeles to San Francisco without a single recharge. The company is known for making the fastest production electric motorcycle LS 218 four years that is capable of running at a top speed of 350 kmph.
Earlier in 2015, Zero Motorcycles set a record of running 483 kilometer on a streamlined Zero S with Terry Hershner as rider. This is the distance record stands unbroken, but with Lightning Motorcycles gearing up to run a 644 km range the former record seems to be broken within a few months.

The battery pack for the prototype that will run 644 kilometer will be built by Indiana’s Battery Innovation Centre. Lightning Motorcycles CEO Richard Hatfield hopes combined the two companies will be able to reach the expected mark and it will set a new benchmark for the electric motorcycle industry. Also, he plans to accelerate the project of a long range motorcycle to reach production level from research and development stage.
Lightning Motorcycle’s journey commenced a decade ago when it converted conventional petrol powered Yamaha R1 into an electric bike. In 2012, the company won FIM ePower series at Laguna Seca with a solar powered Barracuda Lightning and in 2013 the LS-218 won title at Pikes Peak beating the petrol powered bikes.

LS-218 from the electric motorcycle manufacturer comes priced at $38,888, equivalent to Rs. 25,11,534. Presently, the company is planning to roll out a cheaper and more affordable version of the bike that will be priced under $20,000. With this more affordable version of LS-218, Lightning Motorcycle aims to expand its presence and it will also initiate competition among the rival companies to offer electric motorcycle at an affordable pricing.
