Nissan IDS concept made its public debut at the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show and gave a glimpse of the Japanese manufacturer’s take on the future of autonomous driving. Nissan expects to introduce vehicles fully capable of autonomous driving by 2020 for which the first stage process will begin as early as 2016. The IDS concept brings it one step closer to realise that target as the inference behind the concept of driver-less car took centre stage in Tokyo. Described as “vision of the future of autonomous driving”, the Nissan IDS concept presented a sneak preview of the engineering and technological ideas and innovations that will drive the future Nissan models. The company hopes that by the time Nissan Intelligent Driving technology is incorporated on production cars, Electric Vehicles will go greater distances on a single charge. The evolution of battery technology will be pivotal in achieving this feat whilst Nissan is cautious to squeeze out every bit of performance advantage in shaping the car aerodynamically efficient. With pillar less doors and fin-shaped vertical fenders at front and rear, the concept demonstrates a breathtaking view of the future. Besides the lightweight carbon fibre construction, the driverless concept comes with 60 kilowatt-hour electric power plant. However, the spotlight was on how Nissan would produce a car that would ‘learn’ and adapt to the driving style of the owner automatically when switched to the autonomous mode. Some of the other features underlined on the futuristic concept are: Communication between owner and the car via cloud and scheduling based on cloud data with personal identification. Piloted drive mode with 360 degree surveillance courtesy of radars, cameras and laser scanners to determine best behaviors in traffic. A Light On Intention indicator to let the cyclists know that you’re pulling over and most crucially a dashboard on the outside with LED flash lights indicating messages like “After You,” to inform the pedestrians of where the autonomous-driving car heading towards. Long cruising range from EV wireless charging lane and remote piloted parking were other implementations Nissan aims to achieve during the years leading up to 2020 where a fully-grown and completely accessible autonomous car could hopefully be realised.
