Lamborghini Urus SUV nearing production; it uses the brand’s first turbocharger engine paired with a torque converter

The Italian supercar manufacturer, Lamborghini, is closing towards the production of the Urus SUV. The company hints that, despite being a supremely luxury car, it will be able to perform like a power packed SUV. The vehicle might be inspired by supercars instead of a battle tank; but it will come with capability of ‘dune surfing’, as the Lamborghini board member for research and development, Maurizio Reggiani says.

Lamborghini wants to double its sales, and as the SUV and crossover market around the world is rapidly flourishing, the Italian brand is hoping big with the Urus. It was earlier confirmed that, the Lamborghini Urus will get power from the automaker’s first turbocharged engine, a 4.0-litre twin-turbo petrol V8 unit.  And now Mr. Maurizio Reggiani also confirmed that, it will come with a torque converter transmission.

Mr. Reggiani said, an SUV needs to have a level of torque at low RPM; and only a turbocharged engine can do that. He also mentioned that, it has been a strategic decision taken in the board meeting, that the car will use the brand’s first turbocharged engine. Lamborghini made its first SUV in form of the LM002 in past, and the company could use the experience while making the Urus.

Lamborghini unveiled the Urus SUV concept way back in 2012, at the Beijing Auto Show. The car comes based on the same platform shared by the Audi Q7, and it will come much lightweight, due to the carbon-fiber reinforced polymer.

The Lamborghini Urus is also expected to come available in a plug-in hybrid variant as well. The Italian brand might unveil the production version of the Urus SUV at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show. Also expect the car to go on sale in 2018 only.
