Kia Seltos will go on sale from 22nd August 2019 to take on Hyundai Creta and Tata Harrier among other potent mid-size SUVs

Kia Motors is making its presence felt with the Seltos mid-size SUV waiting to go on sale in late August. Since it is the first product, Kia has thrown everything at it and the results were nothing short of impressive. The Kia Seltos will compete primarily against Hyundai Creta and Tata Harrier in the crowded SUV space and we thought it would be interesting to compare them in terms of design and features.

Design

These two objectives can make or break a buying decision and thus carry plenty of importance for a customer. Although looks are subjective, the affinity towards a particular design could change over time. In the case of Hyundai Creta, which did not seem to be that old one year ago, suddenly looks the less desirable due to the modern rivals.

Taking about desirability, the OMEGA platform derived from Land Rover Discovery Sport’s D8 has helped Tata Harrier to have an athletic stance and it is one of the key reasons for its success thus far as more than 8,000 units were sold in less than five months. Based on the Impact Design 2.0 philosophy, the Tata Harrier is a conventional take on the H5X concept that shook the 2018 Auto Expo.

With generous proportions and high ground clearance, the Harrier has a proper SUV appeal with short overhangs, aggressive bumper section, large wheel arches and a sporty rear ticking all the right boxes for a new-age customer. The soon-arriving Kia Seltos, on the other hand, is the most matured as well as having meticulous attention to detail in my opinion.

Perhaps it does not look as intimidating as the Tata Harrier but the cohesive front end boasting a thin strip of LED DRLs positioned above the sharp LED headlamps and the sequential turn indicators get the nod in every step of the way. The bumper is properly balanced too with vertical fog lamps and the Tiger Nose grille bodes well with the overall sleek theme of the Seltos.kia seltos-5

At the side and the rear, the scenario does not change as the sharp character lines, muscular black wheel arches and horizontally placed LED tail lamps put it a notch above the existing Creta. However, things could dramatically change as the next generation Creta arriving early next year is based on the Seltos platform with design cues likely borrowed from the latest ix25.

Upcoming Kia Seltos vs Hyundai Creta vs Tata Harrier – Features

On the features front, the Hyundai Creta despite being priced well below the Harrier lacks quite a number of in-car advanced technologies found in the upcoming Kia Seltos and Tata Harrier.

Some of the key equipment includes 17-inch alloy wheels, projector headlamps, static bending lights, LED positioning lamps, powered sunroof, cruise control, smart key with push start button, automatic climate control, leather trim on the steering wheel and gear knob, 60:40 split, seven-inch touchscreen AVN infotainment with IPS display, Music system with Arkamys sound, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto MirrorLink and navigation, etc.

Over to the top-of-the-line SX (O) trim, the Creta offers contrast interior finish, black roof, six airbags, ESC, HSA, automatic dimming mirror, height adjustable front and rear seatbelts, leather seats, console armrest and door armrests, six-way adjustable powered driver’s seat, smart key band and wireless charging support.

Having relatively been new to the market, the Tata Harrier has a whole host of goodies supplementing the well-made interior.

Notable features include xenon HID projector headlamps, front fog lamps with cornering function, leather wrapped seats, door panels, steering wheel and gear shift knob, an 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, nine JBL speakers with an amplifier, a 7.0-inch digital instrument display, terrain response modes (Normal, Wet and Rough), six airbags, ESP, Isofix child seat mounts, HHC, HDC, roll-over mitigation, cornering stability control, traction control, hydraulic brake assist, 60:40 split folding seats and so on.

The five-seater will be sold in 1.5L petrol, 1.5L diesel and 140 hp 1.4L turbo petrol engine in the GT Line trim. The gearbox choices are a six-speed torque converter AT in diesel, a CVT in petrol and a seven-speed DCT in the range-topping GT.Kia SP2i Interior Design Sketch 10.25 inch touchscreen

The features list is quite substantial with several in-car connective technologies too as the Seltos gets a massive 10.25-inch horizontal touchscreen infotainment system, eight-inch HUD, wireless charging, subscription-based UVO connect, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, satellite navigation, EPB (Electronic Parking Brake), EPS (Electronic Power Steering), ventilated seats, Quiet Mode and Driver Talk Mode, Hill-start Assist Control (HAC), six airbags, ABS, ESC, VSC, blind spot monitoring, front and rear parking sensors, multi-functional steering wheel, sunroof, eight-speaker Bose audio, Smart Cruise Control, Drive Mode Selector with Normal, Eco, and Sport modes, 17-inch diamond cut wheels and much more.
