Ever since it was first launched back in January 2019, Tata Harrier has been gaining a lot of traction in the Indian market and there are many reasons to it. One being its sheer road presence and second being the space inside the cabin. But what differentiates it against its main rivals Jeep Compass and Mahindra XUV500 is how Tata has strategically priced at close to Rs 13 Lakh (ex-showroom). This price differentiation has started to convert in high sales as Tata Harrier has outsold both its rivals in June 2019 sales.
As per the data, Tata managed to displace 1216 units of Harrier in June 2019 as compared to 1129 units of Mahindra XUV500 and 791 units of Jeep Compass. While there’s no comparative analysis for the Tata Harrier as it was launched this year only, both the other cars suffered a decline close to 50 percent.
Precisely, Mahindra XUV500 saw a massive decline of 58 percent as 2717 units of the seven-seater SUV were sold in June 2018, while the Jeep Compass saw a decline of 46 percent, selling 1478 units in June 2018.

The Tata Harrier is the company’s most premium SUV yet and is based on the H5X concept showcased at the 2018 Auto Expo. Powered by the FCA-sourced 2.0-litre Kryotec engine, the Harrier is based on the Land Rover derived D8 platform. The SUV produces 140 PS and 350 Nm and is mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox.
The Jeep Compass is also powered by the same 2.0-litre Multijet engine but has an output of 173 PS, 350 Nm. There’s also a 4×4 and automatic gearbox on offer. It is being reported that the Harrier will soon be updated to add the BS-VI engine and all these shortcomings will be addressed.
While Mahindra XUV500 may not be a direct competitor to the Harrier considering it is only offered with a 5-seater cabin as against 7-seater of XUV500, the upcoming 7-seater Harrier (Buzzard/ Cassini) will fill this void and replace the Tata Hexa as company’s flagship SUV.
