Jeep Gladiator shares lots of components with Wrangler and initially, it will be only offered with a petrol engine as the diesel model will be introduced only in 2020
Jeep has officially revealed its new pickup ‘Gladiator’ at the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show and it is the first pickup of the iconic American brand after 25 years. The design of Gladiator is same as new Wrangler as the front gets round LED headlamps with the signature grille of Jeep and a chunky new design for the front bumper.
The side door comes from the Wrangler and the rear gets LED tail lamps along with new bumper. The frame of Gladiator is completely new and the pickup is 787 mm longer than the Wrangler unlimited. The wheelbase of Gladiator is 3,480 mm as the company has given the solid front and rear axles to improve off-road capability.
The interior of Gladiator is shared with Wrangler and the company has given three different size infotainment screens as the entry-level model get 5-inch then the next one is 7.4-inch and the top-end model gets an 8-inch system with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The company is also offering Bluetooth wireless speaker also.
Some of the features available on Gladiator to improve off-roading are 33-inch tyres (optional 35-inch tyres), electronic locking front and rear differentials, electronic anti-roll bar disconnect, fox monotube shocks, front mounted trail camera for seeing over hills, off-road rear bumper, steel rocker guard and more.
Depending on the variant, the ground clearance changes as top end model get 282 mm ground clearance along with an approach angle of 43.6 degrees, breakover angle of 20.3 degrees and 26 degrees of departure angle. The payload capacity of Gladiator is 725 kgs and the pickup comes with an impressive towing capacity of 3,470 kgs.
The Gladiator is also offered in removable hardtop, soft top and it both, which makes it the only convertible pickup in the market. The company is also offering fold-down windshield and tailgate also comes with a halfway-down option also. Jeep has also focused on safety as the pickup come with lots of safety features.
Initially, the Gladiator will be offered only with a standard 3.6 L V6 Pentastar engine producing 285 hp of power and 352 Nm of torque. This engine is mated to 6 speed manual as standard and an 8-speed gearbox with four-wheel drive system will be offered as an option. Jeep will also offer a diesel engine in 2020 and it is expected to be 3.0 L V6 unit from Grand Cherokee.
