Jeep announced its arrival into the Indian market with the Grand Cherokee, Grand Cherokee SRT and Wrangler Unlimited in August 2016. Fiat has invested a huge sum of money into the domestic operations and to produce Jeep-branded cars locally at the Ranjangaon facility near Pune.
A two-wheel drive and a four-wheel drive versions of the Renegade were reportedly imported to carry out R&D testing for adhering to Indian road conditions in 2016 itself and it is expected to be the next product from American manufacturer to grace Indian scenes next year.
Following the same route will be the Renegade as it will form the upcoming product lineup comprising of a sub-four-metre SUV and a three-row UV. The Renegade which is entering India in 2019 will be based on the global facelift revealed recently.
So without further ado, here we take a profound look into what the India-bound Renegade will feature inside and out:
Jeep Renegade SUV India Launch | mid 2019 |
The compact Renegade SUV is the secret weapon in Jeep’s armoury to cater the demands of mass market and despite spied several times in India, we expected it to launch sometime in the middle parts of next year.
But according to a recent media report, the Renegade is said to enter the domestic scenes only in early 2019. It will ride on the same buzz created by Compass already as it remains as the best-selling model in its segment capitalising on the brand image.
Jeep Renegade SUV India Price | Below Rs. 10 lakh |
Several reports suggested that the Renegade could be priced as low as Rs. 10 lakh (ex-showroom) for the base variant. With the Compass being aggressively positioned in the market from Rs. 14.95 lakh (ex-showroom), the chances of such a brilliant pricing range for Renegade cannot be ruled out either. The top-end models could cost around Rs. 13 lakh.
The front fascia gets vertically slated signature grille, large air dams, aggressive lower portion with fog lamps alongside rugged front and rear bumper with squared wheel arches sticking by its roots. At the rear, the tail lamps are rectangular in shape while the overall body is sharp and sporty despite being boxy in appearance.
2.0-litre Multijet diesel engine/1.4-litre MultiAir Petrol | 120 BHP/ 100-110 BHP (expected) |
Gearbox | six-speed manual and six-speed automatic |
Whilst Fiat will make use of the production base near Pune – with an installed capacity to manufacture over 1.5 lakh cars – the Fiat-sourced four-pod inline Multijet2 2,000 cc engine will be found in the engine bay of the Renegade to bring down the costs as we would expect.
Offered standard is a six-speed manual transmission amid customers can opt for a six-speed automatic gearbox as well. A 1.4 MultiAir petrol as in the Compass is also on the cards.
Length | 4,236 mm |
Width | 1,805 mm |
Height | 1,667 mm |
Wheelbase | 2,570 mm |
The Jeep Renegade measures 4,236 mm in length, 1,805 mm in width, 1,667 mm in height and has a wheelbase of 2,570 mm.
On the inside, the Renegade will likely come equipped with UConnect five-inch touchscreen infotainment system, black leather upholstery and silver accents, automatic climate control system, cruise control, rear parking sensors with camera, 3.5-inch TFT instrument panel, etc.
To achieve the speculated pricing, Jeep has to heavily localize the Renegade as much as the Compass and will have to peel off some premium bits. Therefore, a conventional dashboard and normal steel wheels can be expected in the lower trims while the top-spec variants can be more posh.
FCA uses its Melfi facility in Italy as the production hub for Renegade currently while it is also manufactured in China and Brazil. Similar to the Compass, the local factory can be used as a predominant source for right-hand-drive Renegade models as well.
The Jeep Renegade will compete against some well established SUVs like the Hyundai Creta, Mahindra XUV500, Renault Duster, Nissan Terrano, upcoming Nissan Kicks and Kia Trazor, etc.
