Suzuki Baleno launched in Australia with 1.4L petrol engine derived from Ciaz and 1.0L Boosterjet motor about to feature in upcoming Baleno RS
Suzuki launched the Baleno hatchback with Boosterjet engine for its home market in March 2016. It is being imported from Maruti Suzuki’s Indian facility which emphasises the importance of local exports. Following it up is a market entry in Australia as the India-made Baleno goes on sales at a starting price of AU$15,990 (Rs. 8.03 lakh) for GL manual and AU$17,990 (Rs. 9.03 lakh) for GL automatic variant.
The latest generation Suzuki Baleno is being offered in two trims namely GL and GLX Turbo (priced at Rs. 11.54 lakh). The Australian spec Baleno features dimensional changes while the length, width and wheelbase remain the same as Indian model as it measures 3,995 mm long, 1,745 mm wide and has 2,520 mm wheelbase. Suzuki brought the ride height down by as much as 50 mm as the AU-spec Baleno stands 120 mm above the ground.
The height has been reduced by 30 mm compared to India-spec model as it stands at 1,470 mm. The lowered height and ground clearance do bring the hatchback a sporty and low-slung stance. The Baleno GL grade gets power from a 1.4-litre naturally-aspirated four-pot petrol motor which is good enough to develop 92 hp at 6,000 rpm and 130 Nm of peak torque at 4,000 rpm.
The same engine can be found under the bonnet of Maruti Suzuki Ciaz as well. Both manual and automatic transmissions are available as customers could opt for either a five-speed manual or four-speed auto ‘box. The list of equipment include fog lamps, LED Daytime Running Lights, leather-wrapped steering wheel, touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone integration and Apple CarPlay, electrically adjustable ORVMs, cruise control, etc.
The Baleno GLX Turbo derives power from the 1.0-litre Boosterjet turbocharged petrol engine as Suzuki extends the use of its newly developed powertrain across various global markets. As in Japan, the Australian-spec Baleno has been treated with the Boosterjet engine makes 110 hp at 5,500 rpm and 160 Nm of torque produced between 1,500 and 4,000 rpm.
It is mated to a six-speed CVT automatic transmission. The GLX Turbo top-spec variant gets 16-inch alloy wheels, tilt and telescopic steering wheel, keyless entry and start, door handles garnished in chrome, HID projector lamps, auto climate control system and so on.
