Road testing of SP Concept based Kia compact SUV has begun in its home market; official launch will take place by mid-2019 in India

Kia officially revealed SP Concept at 2018 Auto Expo and it will be the first model to be launched in India. The company has commenced road testing of India bound Kia SP Concept based production model in its home market and the test mule is heavily camouflaged but the overall shape is similar to concept.

The design head of Kia has already confirmed that production model will be similar to concept version. The front gets new grille along with big headlamps and fog lamp housing, which appears to be similar like Creta. The side profile gives the impression of a big car and we can expect good interior space.

The production model of SP Concept will be based on revised Hyundai Creta platform and it will share some components with Creta to keep cost down. Kia conducted a poll to decide name for production version and the popular names are Tusker and Razor, but the company hasn’t revealed official name yet.

Kia will pack the production model with lots of features like touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, climate control, cruise control, wireless charging for smartphone, leather seats, rear AC vents, sunroof, key less entry, push button start, automatic headlamps, rain sensing wipers and more.

Earlier reports indicated that SP Concept production model will be powered by engines from Hyundai Creta. But it will be powered by all new BSVI petrol and diesel engines, which will be introduced in other Hyundai and Kia models. The 1.5 L diesel engine is expected to produce 115 bhp of power and 250 Nm of torque.

The current 1.6 L engine on Creta produces slightly more power but the new engine will deliver better efficiency. Kia will also introduce 1.5 L petrol engine, which is expected to produce similar power output as current 1.6 L engine. These engines will be mated to manual and automatic transmission. Kia will officially launch SP Concept production model by the middle of 2019.
